The Dramatists Guild of America is proud to announce they will present the 2019 Horton Foote Playwriting Award to playwrights Amy Herzog and Heidi Schreck at the Dramatists Guild's annual awards presentations in July. The Richenthal Foundation is again sponsoring the award. Each writer will receive a $12,500 prize.
Powerful drama: still made in America. Lynn Nottage's 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat opens tonight in its Chicago premiere at Goodman Theatre. Ron OJ Parson directs the collision of race, class and friendship at a pivotal moment in America-hailed as 'extraordinarily moving' (The New York Times) and 'passionate and necessary...a masterful depiction of the forces that divide and conquer us' (Time Out New York). Sweat marks the fourth Nottage play to be produced at the Goodman, following Crumbs from the Table of Joy (2006), Ruined (a 2008 world-premiere Goodman commission that earned the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) and By the Way, Meet Vera Stark (2013). The famous mezzo soprano Fredericka von Stade is in San Diego this week rehearsing Three Decembers, one of several works written with her in mind by her close friend Jake Heggie. The chamber opera for three singers and 11 musicians will be performed three times next weekend at the 500-seat Patrick Henry PHAME Theatre. Von Stade recognized Heggie's talent long before he wrote his first opera and has been an influential champion ever since. Their friendship and collaboration have benefitted both. In my interview with her in a San Diego Opera rehearsal room she said, 'He's given me a second career with parts in Dead Man Walking and Great Scott, and a lot of song cycles. He's my guy.'
Written by renowned playwright Horton Foote, THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL is a moving story of family, reminiscing on things that once were, and longing for home. For Carrie Watts, her home is in Bountiful not in a cramped apartment in Houston where she lives with her son and daughter-in-law. As the play progresses, the idea of home is questioned as the characters discover home might mean something a little different than what they once thought.
Bootycandy, Bootycandy Bootycandy! There! I've said it three times and a zombie hasn't appeared but the brilliantly written play by Robert O'Hara has made its appearance in H-town! BOOTYCANDY had its world premiere at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre June of 2011 in Washington D.C. and then it made its way to New York City at Playwrights Horizons in August 2014. Let's just say that the institution of the black theatre was changed and every audience that has witnessed this piece of work has been ever changed! Including me!
