Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) will present Woody Sez: The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie – a joyous, toe-tapping, and inspirational celebration of the ultimate American folk singer (“This Land Is Your Land,” “Bound for Glory”) – from June 8 to 26, according to Artistic Director Courtney Sale and Executive Director Bonnie J. Butkas.

Lyric Theatre has been named the Official Theatre of the State of Oklahoma. Gov. Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 1385, authored by Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd and House Majority Leader Jon Echols, bestowing the honor for the flagship theatre founded in 1963.

n celebration of Bay Area Cabaret's Spring Season Finale at the famed Venetian Room, Fairmont San Francisco, Bay Area Cabaret presents Stephanie J. Block, the sensational star of the mega-hit musical, The Cher Show, on Sunday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. in a program of cherished songs from Broadway musical theater past and present, and the Great American Songbook. Renowned Broadway musical director Ben Cohn will be her accompanist.

BIRDLAND THEATER will present John Manzari – the acclaimed dancer, singer, actor, and choreographer currently appearing on Broadway in Funny Girl – in a special event on Monday, May 23 at 8:30 PM.

New York Stage and Film, will return July 9-August 7 for five weeks of in-person programming in Poughkeepsie for their 2022 Summer Season. 

The Public Theater and National Black Theatre will begin previews on Thursday, May 12 for the upcoming New York Premiere of FAT HAM, written by James Ijames and directed by Public Theater Associate Artistic Director and Resident Director Saheem Ali.

Penguin Rep Theatre announced today the Off-Broadway premiere of Mr. Parker, a new play written by Michael McKeever and directed by Joe Brancato. Performances will begin Wednesday, June 1, 2022, for a limited engagement through June 25, 2022, at Theatre Row – Theatre 1 (410 West 42nd Street). Opening Night is Monday, June 6, 2022, at 7:00PM.

The Dramatists Guild of America has announced the first recipients of their 2022 Awards. The Awards for both 2021 and 2022 recipients will be presented at Joe's Pub on Monday, July 25, 2022.

Blackfriars Theatre has announced its 2022-2023 Season. In the years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic, Blackfriars made a point of raising the bar and the community's expectations of what local theater can look like.

In a year when U.S. headlines are filled with news of increasingly restrictive reproductive rights legislation, and U.S. streets are filled with women protesting for rights they thought they'd won nearly 50 years ago, Solas Nua, the Washington DC-based contemporary Irish arts organization, will stage an Irish play that lands the political firecracker in the middle of a romance. Tonight, May 3, Talia Simone Robinson will become the first Black actor to play Zoe Murphy in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway full-time. Previously Zoe/Alana understudy, Robinson succeeds Gabriella Carruba, who played the role until May 1.

1st Stage has announced that The Mamalogues will now run through May 15.

In the case of the theatre community, theatre practitioners and fans alike are thrilled with the vast array of shows that are beginning their run on Broadway. Both theatre enthusiasts and critics alike flock to new shows, hoping to view an exciting production they will always remember. In turn, the actors, crew and creatives involved with these shows work tirelessly to open a production that will engage audiences and give themselves a sense of accomplishment. Although no shows opened during the Spring of 2021 due to the pandemic, April has already demonstrated that Broadway is back again with the opening of ten new productions! For those who have not been able to witness these productions yet, here is a quick recap of Broadway’s April 2022 openings.

BIRDLAND JAZZ CLUB will present Nashville vocalist Wendy Moten – best known for her 2021 run on NBC’s “The Voice” – in a special concert on Monday, May 16 at 7:00 PM. Her show will include songwriter Richard Whiting hits including “He’s Funny That Way,” “My Ideal,” “Miss Brown,” and “Too Marvelous For Words.”
