Leonard Bernstein's Candide, directed by legend Broadway visionary Harold Prince was presented by the New York City Opera, opening January 6th and running through January 14th.

The opening fanfare of one of the most exhilarating overtures ever to hit Broadway signals the joyous return of New York City Opera. After financial woes threatened to pull down the curtain for good in 2013, the company that was christened in 1943 as 'the people's opera' by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia has returned with a new home and an old friend, director Harold Prince's rollicking production of Leonard Bernstein, Richard Wilbur, Stephen Sondheim, John La Touche and Hugh Wheeler's CANDIDE.

On January 11, 2017, the City Opera Thrift Shop will host the Art Event, with paintings, prints, sculpture, art books from the shop's collection for sale. For the first time ever, City Opera is collaborating with the Self Portrait Project for Art Event. The Self Portrait Project will install its one-of-a-kind, two-way mirror photo booth at the City Opera Thrift Shop for customers to take their own portraits and contribute to the Project's collection.

This month, the legendary Broadway visionary Harold Prince returns to New York City Opera to direct a new production of Leonard Bernstein's Candide.

As of January 1, 2017, Ernie Harburg, son of the legendary lyricist E.Y. 'Yip' Harburg, has stepped down as President of the Yip Harburg Foundation, to be succeeded by Yip's daughter-in-law, Deena Rosenberg Harburg, who is presently the foundation's Artistic Director.

Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE has had more lives than that proverbial cat--the latest being New York City Opera's new take on it, opening on January 6 for a ten-performance run at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theatre. It is, once again, helmed by director Hal Prince and choreographer Pat Birch, who were responsible--with librettist Hugh Wheeler and conductor John Mauceri--for the resuscitation and renovation of the once-considered unproducible work, more than 40 years ago.

In what has become an annual ritual, a total of 32 established and emerging composers, lyricists, and librettists will converge on the Goodspeed campus from mid-January through mid-February 2017 to participate in the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals. The writing teams, representing 18 new musicals, will populate the campus, creating a truly exciting environment for discovery and inspiration.
