92nd Street Y Announces 2018-19 Classical Concert Season

92nd Street Y inaugurates three engaging new series - Chamber Orchestras, a Vocal Series, and Garrick Ohlsson: Brahms Exploration - ushering in a host of original concepts, artists, compositions, and collaborations, in keeping with 92Y's enduring traditions of cultural discovery, intellectual curiosity, and artistic experimentation.  Additionally, 92Y commences Inflection, its first interdisciplinary festival, a six-concert exploration of music in relation to other art forms, including spoken word, photography, sculpture, and dance.  This season also features the World Premieres of Phyllis's Portrait by Sergio Assad and Jonathan Berger's new opera Leonardo, the US premiere of a symphony by Hans Rott, the New York premieres of Wynton Marsalis's new work for solo violin, a new string quartet by Martin Bresnick, and Andreia Pinto Correia's String Quartet No. 1 "Unvanquished Space"; five major international artists making their 92Y performance debuts: Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov, German cellist Alban Gerhardt, Bulgarian violinist Gergana Gergova, the Danish String Quartet, and the Artemis String Quartet; several young musicians also give their 92Y debut performances in the pristine acoustics of Buttenwieser Hall for the Soundspace Series: Jessica Xylina Osborne, Einav Yarden, Conrad Tao (with violinist Stefan Jackiw), the Horszowski Trio, Juho Pohjonen, and Orion Weiss.

The 92Y had a swinging start to it's Lyrics & Lyricists Series this weekend with a blockbuster show celebrating the life and music of Bobby Darin. Ted Chapin with his first undertaking as L&L producer created a fascinating and entertaining production which had many in the 92Y audience commenting 'move it to Broadway.' In fact the 5 day event had many Broadway producers in attendance as the buzz about the show travelled from 92nd street to 42 street.

Faith Prince, Rob McClure, Christiane Noll and Rachel York are among the performers from the worlds of Broadway, jazz and cabaret presenting a panoramic journey through the American Songbook via Broadway, Hollywood and Second Avenue. L&L's shows this season explore MGM Musicals, tunes that swept away the Great Depression, an insider's look at Rodgers & Hammerstein, iconic funny girl Fanny Brice and the glorious songs salvaged from Flop Shows. The fifth season of CONTACT!, the New York Philharmonic's new-music series, opens with An Evening with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Monday, November 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. at SubCulture, a new arts venue in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood. Composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen hosts this concert that features musicians from the New York Philharmonic performing five of his compositions: knock, breathe, shine for solo cello, Memoria for wind quintet, YTA III for solo cello, Homunculus for string quartet, and Second Meeting for oboe and piano. The program is a co-presentation by the New York Philharmonic and 92nd Street Y.

Entering its fifth season in 2013-14, CONTACT!, the New York Philharmonic's new-music series, is extending its reach by presenting more concerts in new venues including SubCulture - a new arts venue in downtown Manhattan - in partnership with 92nd Street Y, and The Museum of Modern Art. The upcoming season of CONTACT! will feature four concert programs, an expansion over previous seasons. Dedicated to the works of emerging and iconic contemporary composers, CONTACT! in the 2013-14 season will feature works for ensembles of New York Philharmonic musicians as well as programs of solo works performed by Philharmonic musicians and distinguished guests.
