The American Film Institute and TV Land announced today that American film's finest performers Cher, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are among the many in the arts and entertainment community who are scheduled to appear when AFI honors beloved film, television and stage director Mike Nichols with the AFI Life Achievement Award. The gala will take place on Thursday, June 10th in the historic Stage 15 on the Sony Studios lot in Culver City, CA. A collection of authors and actors including Stephen Colbert, young adult novelist Libba Bray (winner of the 2010 Printz Award for Going Bovine), Artistic Director of the Public Theater Oskar Eustis, novelist Jayne Anne Phillips (National Book Award finalist Lark & Termite) and novelist and Studio 360 host Kurt Andersen read from and discuss the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill A Mockingbird at Symphony Space's Thalia Book Club on April 28 at 8:00 p.m. The event, which takes place on the 84th birthday of author Harper Lee, marks the 50th anniversary of the watershed work. The evening will include readings, discussion and an audience Q&A. Tickets are $24, $20 for members.

Despite a few glimmers of hope and the promise of a transformative evening of theatre, the current Circle Players production of To Kill a Mockingbird is a thoroughly passionless and completely uninspired staging of Harper Lee's classic Southern tale and, clearly, is one of the biggest disappointments of the Nashville theatre season.
