The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is pleased to announce the 40th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival will be hosted from August 24–September 2 in Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and at venues throughout the city. Among many featured headline guests, on September 1 Chicago native Ramsey Lewis will perform his last live performance in Chicago before his retirement. B.B. Kings Blues Club & Grill, a musical venue in the heart of the theatre district, has just announced that it will close its 42nd Street location at the end of this month. An official statement reads:
After 18 years of hosting some of music and entertainment's most revered names, B.B. King Blues Club & Grill has announced its final run of shows in its current Times Square location (237 W 42nd St). Due to escalating rent, the historic venue and supper club is forced to close its doors with a final performance on April 29, 2018. B.B. King Blues Club is in the process of selecting a new location in Manhattan to relocate the venue.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced Questlove: Creative Quest, a one-night-only discussion and book signing event on April 28. Questlove-musician, bandleader, designer, producer, culinary entrepreneur, professor, founding Kennedy Center Hip Hop Culture Council member, and all-around cultural omnivore-will discuss his new book (released on April 24) and share his thoughts on the topics of creativity, inspiration, and originality with special guest Sanford Biggers, visual and interdisciplinary artist and moderator Ben Greenman (co-author, Mo' Meta Blues).
With less than three months until Iceland's Secret Solstice celebrates its fifth anniversary, the midnight sun music festival has revealed its phase three lineup for June 21-24, 2018 in the capital city of Reykjavik. Leading the announcement additions, Secret Solstice calls upon funk legend George Clinton and his Parliament Funkadelic collective, seminal Icelandic music group GusGus (DJ set), Diynamic DJ/production duo Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Italian techno maestro Marco Faraone, Dirtybird's J.Phlip and more. MojaMoja celebrated its 10th Anniversary of music discovery on February 10th at the Avalon Hollywood. The brunch benefit concert was attended by more than 250 cultural and musical tastemakers who came together to celebrate the stellar achievements of Hip Hop icons will.i.am, The Beat Junkies, a legendary West Cost DJ crew, and Prince's band The Revolution. The concert featured performances from breakout artists Jungle Fire with their highly explosive psychedelic afro/latin funk sound; The Steoples, a genre-fusion alternative R&B duo; Wajatta, the collaborative between comedian-musician Reggie Watts and electronic musician, DJ and producer John Tejada; along with the drumming prodigy Elise Trouw, a gifted modern indie pop multi-instrumentalist who has a viral-mashup of 'Everlong' by Foo Fighters and 'What You Won't Do for Love' by Bobby Caldwell with more than 7 million views on Facebook. Pink Martini, a McCallum favorite returns for eight great shows Friday, February 9, through Thursday, February 15. In 1994 in his hometown of Portland, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics, with the intention of eventually running for office. Like other eager politicians-in-training, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun, but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming, lackluster, loud and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world, crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop, and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the "little orchestra" Pink Martini in 1994 to provide beautiful and inclusive musical for political fundraisers for progressive causes such as civil rights, the environment and affordable housing.
