Review: CREATURE BY AKRAM KHAN, Sadler's Wells
by Louise Penn
- Mar 24, 2023
Creature is a fascinating experiment, but requires a familiarity with both pieces of source material and a constant attention to what is going on in the story. This may ultimately isolate the audience from full enjoyment. It has much to say on experimentation and torture, but doesn’t quite make the connection we need to feel involved and engaged.

BWW Review: LENZ at Kinneksbond
by David Sousa Lopes
- Nov 21, 2018
On the 15th of November, the Kinneksbond received an interesting version of Georg Buchner's Lenz, a pivotal text that helped shape the early decades of German modernism. Very few literary works from its time have focused so openly on depression, degrading mental health and the weight of loneliness and social isolation on the human mind as Lenz, making it no easy challenge to present this work as a play.

BWW Review: WOYZECK, Old Vic
by Jenny Gilbert
- May 25, 2017
The very survival into the 21st century of an unfinished play written by a 23-year-old in 1836 is an extraordinary thing, made more extraordinary by the grimness of its subject. Even to call Georg Buchner's text a play - 'the world's first working-class tragedy' - is a bit of a stretch.
