When the Harlem Renaissance was in vogue at the dawn of the 20th Century, the jazz clubs around Jungle Alley, between Lenox and Seventh Avenue - The Savoy Ballroom, Small's Paradise, Minton's Playhouse, Clark Monroe's Uptown House, The Ubangi Club, Park Palace, Connie's Inn, and others - were the place to be. These immortal nightclubs, concert halls, cabarets, speakeasies and ballrooms, will be channeled and showcased May 4 - 10 at the Fourth Annual Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival.
As New York City bandleader George Gee says, “Swing Makes You Happy” and that's the title of the George Gee Swing Orchestra's Kickstarter campaign to fund a double CD of new music. The campaign runs through December 12th on Kickstarter.com. When their goal is reached the recording process begins in New York and continues until the final CD is ready in May of 2014. Says Gee “The GGSO is making this CD to honor the swingin' BIG BAND sound and its creators, as well as give voice to modern, yet eminently danceable compositions featuring the arrangements and original writing by the band's highly-regarded Music Director and Trombonist David Gibson.” The band aims to record their new music and continue the tradition of swingin' big bands.
Tickets are on sale now for Lincoln Center's 23rd season of Midsummer Night Swing taking place every Tuesday through Saturday, June 28-July 16, with an added opening event on Monday, June 27th.

Cinnabar Theater has announced its 2010 to 2011 season, which includes comedies, musicals and a new play entitled 'Dracula,' written expressly for Cinnabar Theater by playwright and screenwriter Eric Overmyer the writer of hit HBO shows 'The Wire' and 'Treme.'
Tickets are on sale now for Lincoln Center's 22nd season of Midsummer Night Swing which will take place every Tuesday through Saturday, June 29-July 17 (except July 13, which will be replaced with a night of dancing on Monday, July 12th). Afrobeat star Femi Kuti & The Positive Force takes over on July 12th, with the associate choreographer from FELA! sweating out the relentless beats and a pre-show DJ set by Jump n' Funk's Rich Medina with Sahr from the cast of FELA! On July 14th songstress Catherine Russell and Cat & The Hounds Swing Band takes over, with a bluesy, jazz-tinged night of swing.
