STAGE TUBE: On This Day 1/29- SWEET CHARITY

Today in 1966, Sweet Charity opened at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for 608 performances. Featuring music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, the musical was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon. It is based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions.

Eisenhower Dance to Perform at Wharton Center, 2/12

EISENHOWER DANCE, Michigan's premier contemporary dance company, presents its popular program RED, HOT AND BLUE at Wharton Center on February 12, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. RED, HOT AND BLUE includes works by EISENHOWER Artistic Director Laurie Eisenhower and choreographers Michael Foley and Ron de Jesus, including: “Threads,” a dance expressing intimacy, passion, and introspection through an ever-evolving series of duets and solos; “Better Places,” a fun and bluesy work; and “The Show,” a piece inspired by the work of Federico Fellini, whose films depict life as a circus. The performance is completed by Ron de Jesus's “Begin with the End in Mind,” a beautiful and romantic work full of interconnected lifts that test the strength and grace of the dancers. Rehearsals Start Today for SWEET CHARITY at Hayes Theatre Company

The Hayes Theatre came to life this morning as the cast and crew of Sweet Charity arrived for their first official day of rehearsals in the venue. The cast knocked everyone's socks off with their first read-through and sing-through of the iconic score.

DRUMS OF ILLUMINATION Set for Theater for the New City, Jan 5

Internationally renowned singer/dancer/percussionist Alessandra Belloni and I Giullari di Piazza present 'Drums of Illumination,' a program of ritual drumming, trance dances, and chants representing four great cultural traditions: Southern Italian, Native American, Middle Eastern, and African Music. Belloni and I Giullari will be joined by the SilverCloud Native American Singers and Dancers, completing a remarkable group of percussionists, vocalists and dancers, all specializing in healing and ritual music and dance. Sunday, January 5th at 6 PM at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue.

MoMA Pays Tribute to Production Designer Dante Ferretti with Multimedia Installation Today

The Museum of Modern Art honors Dante Ferretti (Italian, b. 1943) with a large-scale multimedia installation comprising a 12-screen labyrinth featuring projected scenes from his work; original set pieces from the films that earned him three Academy Awards; and a six-month retrospective of 22 films featuring the production designer's career-defining work. DANTE FERRETTI: DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION FOR THE CINEMA, on view from today, September 28, 2013 through February 9, 2014, features large-scale, original set pieces recovered from sets designed by Ferretti, including the chandeliers from Pier Paolo Pasolini's SALÓ, or THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (1977) and the massive, illuminated clock from Martin Scorsese's HUGO (2011), as well as sculptural objects created for the Venice Film Festival.

Lost Orson Welles' TOO MUCH JOHNSON, Found in Italy

George Eastman House, together with the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF), the Cineteca del Friuli, and Cinemazero today announced the recovery of Mercury Theatre's long-lost Too Much Johnson, directed by Orson Welles in 1938. The silent film was found in a warehouse by the staff of Cinemazero, an art house in Pordenone, Italy.

DOMA Theatre Company Presents NINE, Now thru 8/18

Enter the glamorous world of 'Cinema Italiano' when DOMA Theatre Company presents Nine, the multiple Tony Award-winning musical with book by Arthur Kopit and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston that is based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8 ½. For NINE, DOMA reunites the creative team behind its recent hit production of Dreamgirls: Marco Gomez directs, musical direction is by Chris Raymond and choreography is by Rae Toledo. The six-week run opens July 12at the intimate MET Theatre in Hollywood.
