Zephyr Quartet's next Adelaide performance, Beyond the Screen at The Promethean on Sunday October 27 - will feature a program of rarely performed concert works for string quartet by three of the most famous composers of film music and premiere a new commission from Adelaide-born composer/producer/violinist, Alies Sluiter.

Beyond the Screen is a collaborative project initiated by Zephyr violinist Emily Tulloch. The concert will see the Quartet perform a compelling program of four compositions including three 'lost works' by Nino Rota, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Bernard Herrmann - each written specifically for the concert stage but which has since been overshadowed by the respective composers' silver screen success.

Italy's Rota was Federico Fellini's composer of choice, also penning the memorable score for Francis Ford Coppola'sThe Godfather trilogy. Zephyr will perform his 'String Quartet' (1948-54). Austrian film and music composer Korngold found fame with his swashbuckling epics from the Golden Age of Hollywood, including the Errol Flynn celluloid classic The Adventures of Robin Hood. In his honour, Zephyr will perform his work String Quartet No. 2 (1933). Herrmann wrote one of the most memorable film scores of all time, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, as well as the music to Citizen Kane and later Taxi Driver. Beyond the Screen will celebrate the talents of this American motion picture musical master with the performance of his piece Echoes for String Quartet (1965).

Rounding out the program will be the premiere performance of a new work by Alies Sluiter - specially commissioned by Zephyr Quartet for this concert. Alies' credits include composing, arranging, producing and musically directing for feature films, documentaries and numerous commissioned works. She has worked in various roles with and for a diverse range of Australian and International Artists including Nitin Sawhney, Hugh Jackman and The Shaolin Monks of China. Zephyr Quartet and Alies have collaborated several times before, with the ensemble most recently performing another of her works as part of their 'COMA presents' concert in Adelaide in June. Alies is currently working on the score of a feature film in the US.

Zephyr Quartet is a bold and adventurous string quartet, delighting in the exploration of diverse music and forging dynamic collaborations. Since its inception in 1999, the quartet has shown a continued determination to expand the boundaries of art music and how it's received by audiences.
