Review: MISS MAUDE Gains Potential at AD Players

You would think a story with its title character would be the main focus of a play. For example, Beetljuice the Musical’s title character almost never leaves the stage and has a character arc, or in The Music Man, the literal Music Man, Harold Hill, remains the center of attention for most of its play. Unfortunately, Miss Maude at AD Players, a play that draws inspiration from a selfless black nurse from the 1950s, fails to provide its title character anything more than a plot point for its white male protagonist. This ultimately leads to a Pre-Broadway World Premiere that with some tweaking could see a fully successful commercial run in both New York and other theaters. While I did not personally enjoy some aspects of the story, Martin Casella has the beginnings of what could be a great play.

BWW Review: New York ghosts consider the meaning of life and art in the jazz-fueled (A)LOFT MODULATION at A.R.T./NY Theatres

'If you want to know what's wrong with this country, go ask a jazz musician.'  Jaymes Jorsling's new play (A)loft Modulation is a lot like jazz.  Some sections are scintillating, magical and transporting while others are elongated and incongruous.  Patience, however, will reward those who travel this path.  A fascinating time capsule view into a vivid and complicated world of artists, dreams, demons and drugs awaits.

National Sawdust+ presents ELEMENTS OF TIME + TASTE

National Sawdust+ presents Elements of Time + Taste: A night of inventive food, mixology, and music on Thursday, September 28, at 7:30pm. Two Williamsburg culinary and mixology notables,Patrick Connolly (Rider's James Beard award-winning chef/owner) and Allen Katz (the so-called cocktail world enigma of New York Distilling Company), will create a tantalizing experience for the palate, joining forces with a lineup of remarkable composer-musicians including singer Magos Herrera, multi-instrumentalist Yuka C. Honda (of Cibo Matto, or Food Madness, fame), and the evening's music director, pianist Oded Lev-Ari, who leads the ensemble. Together, they are dreaming up an evening that explores the four natural elements through curated pairings of music, libations, and delectable bites. Ranging from tango to electronic music to Mexican folk song, the musical program will include the world premiere of Chopping Music and a piece inspired by the humble juniper berry.

The W. Eugene Smith Fund is pleased to announce that Justyna Mielnikiewicz is the recipient of its 2016 grant in humanistic photography for her project, A Diverging Frontier: Russia and its Neighbors, which explores how Soviet Republics like Georgia and Ukraine are still looking for ways to break away from Russia's sphere of influence. Receiving the Smith Grant will allow her to complete the work, which began in 2001, and present a comprehensive visual guide to the region 25 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The $30,000 grant was presented to Justyna Mielnikiewicz during the foundation's 37th annual awards ceremony at the SVA Theater in New York City.

'THE PROCESS AND THE PAGE' Exhibition on View thru 8/17 at Phoenix Art Museum

The latest photography exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum walks visitors through the five-step process involved in the creation of a photographic book. On display are fifteen books published from 1930 to 2013 by nine celebrated photographic artists including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, and W. Eugene Smith. As a vocal proponent of the photographic book, American photographer Ansel Adams helped pave the way for photographers to embrace the book as a medium to organize, disseminate, and promote their work. Presented alongside the books themselves are archive objects— including proposals, correspondence, drafts, expense reports, and marketing plans— to help illustrate the artists' role in every aspect of a book from design to production.
