Supplying funding to emerging artists is a dream come true. The dance community is small, and if we don't support each other, especially by encouraging fledgling dancers and choreographers at the genesis of their careers, then what hope do we have for the future of dance?

We've just wrapped our incredible weeklong tour of the state of Yucatan, Mexico, with meetings, workshops, rehearsals, performances and a press conference. This was Eryc Taylor Dance's third tour of the Yucatan, and second year performing at the grand Teatro Jose Peon Contreras in Merida in the International Dance Festival Avant Garde.
Friday night was our performance in Chochola, on an open-air stage set up in front of the Palacio Municipal. We were presenting works from our NYC Season at Martha Graham Studio Theater (October, 2017) as well as the 14-18 year old students from our local Eryc Taylor Dance Outreach workshops.
Thursday was our second day of workshops in Chochola. But before traveling to Chochola from Merida, we headed to Teatro Jose Peon Contreras for a press conference. A planned 45-minute press conference was extended to 90 minutes! We are so grateful for the support from local and national newspapers and the radio and TV interviewers, who were so interested in our upcoming performances and the ETD Movement Outreach programs we conduct in NYC. ETD Outreach is tailored to vulnerable populations in NYC who live in supportive housing sites and homeless shelters. There we use dance as a therapeutic outlet for self-expression, and that is what we translate into our workshop classes in Chochola.
Yesterday, we started our day with a visit to the US Consulate in Merida, which has given huge support to our program, as well as to the Merida English Library, which is also helping spread the word about our visit to Mexico. In addition, we visited the beautiful Teatro Jose Peon Contreras, which will host our ETD performances this weekend. Our lighting designer was anxious to meet with the theater's technical director, to create a lighting plan for our performance in this magnificent space. My breath was taken away when I looked out at the sea of seats underneath the five beautiful balconies, and at the rotunda murals above. Teatro Jose Peon Contreras is a massive, gorgeous theater.
