Artist Kara Walker, best known for iconic cut-paper silhouettes that address such highly charged themes as race, gender, sexuality, and repression, will be honored at the eighth annual Women in the Arts luncheon on Thursday, November 4, 2010. Proceeds from the event, which is organized by the Museum's Community Committee, a volunteer organization, will benefit the many artistic and cultural programs offered by the Brooklyn Museum and its Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
Five of the six editors of Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by Women in SNCC (University of Illinois Press), join moderator Debra L. Schultz for a conversation about their own activist experiences and their ground-breaking efforts to preserve the personal stories of 52 women who fought for civil rights with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s.

Presented by the Museum's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, the event will be held in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium and is free with Museum admission.

During March and April the Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of public programs for adults including a panel discussion celebrating the third anniversary of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art entitled 'Redstockings, Riot Grrls, and Right Now: Three Generations of Feminism in Conversation'; live musical performances by the Brooklyn Philharmonic, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, and Falu; a gallery talk with artist Kiki Smith; and a talk on Egyptological rarities in the Museum's Wilbour Library.
