Seven of the world's greatest five-string banjo players will stop Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Jorgensen Center on the UConn campus to hold a "New York Banjo Summit" that ranges from solos and duets to full-tilt banjo blowouts. These experts have united for a limited East Coast tour to perform with an acoustic band in conventional and unexpected ways and covering the traditional bluegrass and old-time country to the more progressive jazz, classical and rock genres. The show starts at 8 p.m.
Mandolin virtuoso and composer Chris Thile, a multiple-Grammy Award winner and a MacArthur Fellow, has long been known as an audacious improviser and a tireless collaborator whose work has incorporated bluegrass, folk, rock, jazz, and classical elements. Besides his brilliant bandmates in Punch Brothers, his fellow travelers have also included pianist Brad Mehldau, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, guitarist Michael Daves, and double bassist/composer Edgar Meyer, among others. On this new program, he draws from his new Bach recording, while also exploring his own compositions and contemporary music.

On Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall presents mandolin virtuoso, composer, and vocalist, Chris Thile-of the ensemble Punch Brothers-in a program that features Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin played on the mandolin, along with original compositions and contemporary music. Thile's recording of three works by Bach-Sonata No. 1 in G minor, Partita No. 1 in B minor, and Sonata No. 2 in A minor-was recently released on his recording Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1 on Nonesuch Records. The record was produced by Thile's friend, mentor, and frequent collaborator, the double bassist and composer Edgar Meyer.

The Nashville Musicians Association, AFM Local 257 and the Nashville Symphony Association have reached a tentative agreement regarding the orchestra musicians' contract. The agreement is pending ratification by the members of the orchestra. No further comments or details will be released until the ratification process has been successfully completed.

Before leading the orchestra in Elgar's Enigma Variations- a series of charming musical sketches about the composer's closest friends -Tovey, an eloquent host, will share some of the unsolved mysteries of the work's "secret" contents. Season after season, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), India's premier arts and culture institution, presents the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI), performing magnificent orchestral works by different composers, as well as music rarely, or never before heard, in Mumbai.
