BWW Review: DETROIT '67 a Lot Like Baltimore '15

Morisseau's explanation of the Detroit riots makes a lot of sense, and resonates with my understanding of what happened last year in Baltimore. Morisseau's thesis is that the black citizens of Detroit were not crazy, just reacting to an ongoing culture of police abuse, and that abusive police and military responses were to blame for most of what went wrong once the spark of protest had been struck by the raid of an unlicensed after-hours drinking club known as a 'blind pig.'

Annual 'Playwrights for a Cause', Benefitting New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, to Be Held in July

The annual Playwrights for a Cause benefit will be Sunday, July 24th at 7:30 pm at the Atlantic Theatre (Linda Gross Theater), 336 West 20th Street, NYC 10011. The special performance will include six original plays. This year the playwrights for the benefit will include: Israel Horovitz, Dominique Morisseau, Antoinette Nwandu, John Patrick Shanley, Regina Taylor as well as an award-winning writer from the Planet Connections community that will be announced later.

Blair Underwood, Ruben Santiago-Hudson & More Set for THE DETROIT PROJECT Events

Native Detroiter and Internationally Awarded Playwright, Actress and Television Writer Dominique Morisseau is returning home with Blair Underwood, Andre Holland and Ruben Santiago-Hudson for a public of event around her cycle of Detroit plays, entitled 'The Detroit Project'. The first acclaimed play in the cycle, DETROIT '67, about the 1967 uprising, is premiering in Detroit May 13-June 5th with the Detroit Public Theatre at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center.

Kennedy Center to Livestream EVERY 28 HOURS PLAYS Preview

As part of the kick-off event for the 2016 Kennedy Center (KC) American College Theater Festival, a special preview of the EVERY 28 HOURS PLAYS will be performed and livestreamed as part of KC's Millennium Stage Series. The preview consists of an excerpt of the collection with more than 30 one-minute plays inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, with participation by theater makers and institutions across the nation and showcases the creative outcome of a community outreach residency in Ferguson and St. Louis County, Missouri in the fall of 2015.

2016 National Festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Begins Next Week

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosts more than 150 outstanding theater students from colleges and universities across the nation as part of the 48th annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF), which runs April 12-16, 2016 in multiple locations throughout the Center. Thousands of student artists from eight regions across the country presented their work at regional festivals from January 5 through February 27, 2016 and more than 150 were selected to travel to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., for an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the national festival.

TheaterWorks Announces 2016-2017 Season

Cynthia Nixon and Nilaja Sun to Host Epic Education Benefit 2016

On March 20, 2016 (6:30 pm) join Epic Theatre Ensemble in honoring outstanding education partners working for diverse communities in New York City. The event will be hosted by award winners Cynthia Nixon (Wit, Rabbit Hole, Sex and the City) and Nilaja Sun (Epic Artist & Mentor, No Child...., Pike St.).

National Black Theatre to Present UN-TAMED

In celebration of Women's History Month, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's NATIONAL BLACK THEATRE will present a six (6) performance limited engagement of UN-TAMED: Hair Body Attitude. Created by The New Black Fest (TNBF) and guest-curated by Dominique Morisseau (author of NY TIMES CRITICS PICK Skeleton Crew and Sunset Baby), UN-TAMED is a collection of five (5) short plays by Black Women that explore and dig into the national conversation surrounding Black womanhood and social perceptions of Black femininity. This production will be co-directed by award winning directors Kaia Calhoun and Elizabeth Van Dyke.

Actors Theatre of Louisville Sets 2016-17 Season
