Today, December 3 and the 4th, La MaMa will hold a two-day series of conversations, workshops and panels to accompany the two productions of its European Young Directors' Forum. Participants will include European directors Bojan Djordjev (Serbia/Croatia), Paul Knieriem (The Netherlands), Bastian Kraft (Germany), Ana Tomovic (Serbia) and U.S. based directors Anne Bogart, Meiyin Wang, John Jesurun and Charlotte Braithwaite.

Blackface CLYBOURNE PARK Production Cancelled in Germany

Berlin's Deutsches Theater was to present CLYBOURNE PARK, the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, earlier this year - with a white actress in 'experimental makeup' playing the black characters Francine and Lena. Today, Village Voice columnist Michael Musto writes that the production was cancelled after playwright Bruce Norris revoked the rights; in a published letter to the Dramatists Guild, Norris explains his reasoning and condemns the tradition of blackface in German theatres:

Closing Aurora's 20th season is the World Premiere of SALOMANIA, Aurora Theatre Company Artistic Director Tom Ross's first new play commission for the company, written and directed by award-winning Bay Area auteur Mark Jackson (Metamorphosis, Salome, Miss Julie). Workshopped and developed at Aurora in 2010, SALOMANIA features Madeline H.D. Brown (Metamorphosis), Mark Anderson Phillips (Small Tragedy), Alex Moggridge (Betrayed), Liam Vincent (California Shakespeare Theater), Anthony Nemirovsky (Awake and Sing!), Marilee Talkington (Crowded Fire), and Kevin Clarke (Shotgun Players). SALOMANIA plays tonight, June 15 through July 22 at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley.

Im Haus des Wissenschaftlers Pawel Protassow und seiner Ehefrau Jelena gehen viele Menschen ein und aus: der Künstler Dimitrij, der in Jelena verliebt ist, die reiche Witwe Melanija, die ihrerseits Pawel liebt, sowie der Tierarzt Boris, der schon seit langem Protassows Schwester Lisa zugetan ist. Schließlich noch der Hausmeister Jegor, der seinen Beruf versteht, aber trinkt und seine Frau schlägt. Alle Figuren sind auf der Suche nach einem erfüllten, einem besseren, einem wertvollen Leben. Wie muss man arbeiten, wie miteinander leben, um so etwas wie Sinn zu verspüren? Sie verstehen einander nicht, sind sich fern und scheitern bereits im alltäglichen Zusammenleben. Neurotisch, unglücklich, egoistisch und zutiefst komisch hat sich jeder in seinem Kokon eingerichtet. Draußen auf der Straße, 'unten' findet eine wirkliche Revolte nicht statt. Eine Utopie ist nicht in Sicht, und es sieht so aus, als würde es noch eine Weile so weiter gehen.

Vor Jahren, nachdem ihr kleiner Sohn ertrunken war, ging die Gutsbesitzerin Ranjewskaja nach Frankreich. Nun kehrt sie, von der Liebe enttäuscht, mit ihrer Familie nach Hause zurück: Haus und Hof kommen unter den Hammer, die Schulden sind zu hoch. Wie die Rettung aussieht, weiß Geschäftsmann Lopachin: Man könne auf dem Grundstück Datschen errichten und sie an Sommergäste vermieten. Voraussetzung dafür ist allerdings, den berühmten Kirschgarten der Familie abzuholzen.
