The National YoungArts Foundation Launches Regional Programs in LA, NYC, and Miami

National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) President and CEO Carolina Garc a Jayaram announces details for the organization's 2018 regional programs in Miami, Los Angeles and New York. Spanning the country, YoungArts regional programs are modeled after National YoungArts Week, the organization's signature program held annually in Miami. This year, 757 YoungArts winners extraordinarily talented aspiring artists ages 15 18 or grades 10 12 from 47 states will have the opportunity to participate in classes led by master teachers such as Inna Faliks (1996 Winner in Classical Music), Marina Lomazov, Roger Bonair-Agard, Patricia Engel, Kimberly Browning, and more. Winners will participate in interdisciplinary workshops, professional development seminars and present their work to the public through performances, exhibitions and readings at world-class arts institutions in each city.

The Wallis will be the place for jazz lovers this month when the performing arts center, in conjunction with the Arturo Sandoval Institute, present a special four-night musical celebration curated by the dynamic American jazz legend Arturo Sandoval from Today, January 25 through Sunday, January 28. Porchlight Music Theatre continues its fifth season of Chicago's lost musicals in staged concert series with Porchlight Revisits They're Playing Our Song, starring Sharriese Hamilton and James Earl Jones II, music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager and book by Neil Simon, with direction and choreography by Christopher Carter and musical direction by Andra Velis Simon. Porchlight Revisits They're Playing our Song is presented for three-nights-only Tuesday, March 6 through Thursday, March 8 at 7:15 p.m. and is performed on the set of Porchlight's Merrily We Roll Along (previews begin January 26) at Porchlight's new home, The Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N. Dearborn Street. Tickets for They're Playing Our Song are $35. All tickets include access to the popular pre-performance event, Behind the Show Backstory, a multimedia presentation, created and hosted by Porchlight Music Theatre Artistic Director Michael Weber that discusses the evening's production including the show's creative history, juicy backstage gossip and the state of the art on Broadway that season. RAGTIME Comes to Axelrod PAC in March; Luis Salgado of In The Heights To Direct

The Axelrod Performing Arts Center (APAC) in Deal Park, NJ, in cooperation with Salgado Productions, will bring Ragtime, The Musical to the stage from March 3-25, in a new production directed and choreographed by Luis Salgado, who is returning to the theater after last year's successful production of In the Heights.

On Saturday, January 13, 2018, the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) announced the appointment of Sarah Arison as Chair of the Board of Trustees during the organization's largest annual fundraiser, the Backyard Ball performance and gala. Ms. Arison will assume the position immediately. The celebratory evening honored Academy Award-winning playwright and YoungArts master teacher Tarell Alvin McCraney (1999 YoungArts Winner in Theater) with the 2018 Arison Alumni Award for his contributions and commitment to the arts.

The Broadway musical, I Have a Dream, first debuted in 1976 with Billy Dee William playing Dr. King. The play portrays the life of Dr. King and important moments of the civil rights movement through song and dance. Written by Josh Greenfield and directed by veteran actor Herman LeVern Jones of TheatreSouth, the production has toured internationally. It includes many gospel songs from the Civil Rights Movement, including We Shall Overcome and Free at Last to be performed by professional soloists and the Fresh Start Church Gospel Choir of Glen Burnie. Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks praised the show when they saw it in the 1980's. Order tickets at www.mlkjrmd.org. Company XIV's NUTCRACKER ROUGE Wins Goldstar National Nutcracker Award

Company XIV has won the 11th Annual Goldstar National Nutcracker Award, the only award which honors live performances of the seasonal classic. As winner of the audience-favorite competition, Company XIV takes home 'The Nutty' statuette, a cash prize for its education/accessibility programs, and is named the best-loved Nutcracker in the U.S. for 2017. This production competed in the largest field of nominees in the award's history -- it beat out over 85 other Nutcracker-themed productions for the win.
