On October 27 and 31, LA Opera presents a special Halloween treat for cinephiles and opera lovers alike: a screening of Carl Theodor Dreyer's suspenseful and surreal 1932 cinematic masterpiece Vampyr, featuring the world premiere of a new musical score by Joby Talbot performed live at the spectacular Theatre at Ace Hotel.

The story bridges the dichotomy between the civilian perception of war and the conditions experienced by soldiers. It shows the reason why veterans often choose not to tell their war stories to anyone who has never been to war. As The Soldier says repeatedly: "I never talk about this." Bill Morrison's film illustrates the resulting loss of innocence and the gnawing fear brought about by living in danger.

Recent Grammy Award-winners Third Coast Percussion return to Liquid Music with new works by two incredible musical minds: the iconic American composer Philip Glass and the pop polymath Devonte Hynes, a.k.a. Blood Orange. Glass's new work, written for Third Coast Percussion and co-commissioned by Liquid Music, is his first ever for percussion ensemble. Hynes, who has also become a Glass collaborator in recent years, brings his "dense modern pop with roots in hip-hop, R&B and NYC culture" (The Guardian) to an entirely new sound world in his piece for Third Coast Percussion. Baruch Performing Arts Center is pleased to present the world premiere of Words on the Street, a hybrid music-theater event that wrestles with power, complacency, and excess. Originally written by Anna Rabinowitz as a series of poems, Words on the Street has been transformed into a unique production, collaboratively conceived and developed by Rabinowitz, director Kristin Marting, the late composer Matt Marks (1980-2018), and video designer Lianne Arnold. In response to the untimely death of Matt Marks, a community of composers, Lainie Fefferman, John Glover, Mary Kouyoumdjian, David T. Little, Kamala Sankaram, Caroline Shaw, and Randall Woolf have contributed additional compositions to create a highly original sonic world for the work. Music direction is by Mila Henry.

Winner of the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance, The Crossing, led by conductor Donald Nally, presents The Tower and The Garden on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill. The evening features two world premieres, including Gregory Spears' The Tower and the Garden and Philadelphia composer James Primosch's new work Carthage. The concert also includes other works written for The Crossing, Joel Puckett's dizzying I enter the earth (2015), and Toivo Tulev's A child said, what is the grass? (2015).

The Ford Theatres and LA Opera Off Grand, in collaboration with Beth Morrison Projects, present Soldier Songs, a monodrama for baritone and chamber orchestra on Saturday, October 13, 2017 at 8:30pm. The performance will take place at the Ford Theatres (2580 Cahuenga Boulevard East, Los Angeles CA 90068).

Opera/Theatre/Now announces full programming for the seventh annual festival of fresh opera-theatre & music-theatre, running January 5-13, 2019 and featuring ten presentations that "shift the whole paradigm of what opera is and can be" (New York Observer).

This fall, contemporary opera producer AMERICAN OPERA PROJECTS (AOP) will present COMPOSERS & THE VOICE: SIX SCENES 2018, a showcase concert of opera scenes from nine artists emerging in the world of contemporary opera. Audiences will get a first look at six wildly different new works invoking diverse settings such as the Arab Spring in Tunisia, a post-apocalyptic future, and a modern college campus and exploring a multitude of themes and concepts, including the emotional minefield of solar flares, the dissonance of fundamentalism in urban and regional communities, and the nature and validity of Opera itself. The composers Matt Browne, Scott Ordway, Frances Pollock, Pamela Stein Lynde, Amber Vistein and Alex Weiser, and librettists Laura Barati, Kim Davies, andSokunthary Svay, were chosen by AOP to spend a year creating new works in its bi-annual fellowship program Composers & the Voice (C&V). The evening will be hosted by C&V Artistic Director Steven Osgood.

The Crossing, winner of the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance, releases its next album, Lansing McLoskey: Zealot Canticles on September 28, 2018 on Innova Recordings. Based on Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka's 'Twelve Canticles for the Zealot' - a strangely beautiful and terrifying look into the minds of fanatics - Lansing McLoskey's Zealot Canticles is a concert-length choral 'oratorio' for clarinet, string quartet, and 24-voice choir. The work makes virtuosic demands on all the artists, particularly on the clarinetist, here, Philadelphia's Doris Hall-Galuti. The string quartet on the album is comprised of violinists Rebecca Harris and Mandy Wolman, violist Lorenzo Raval, and cellist Arlen Hlusko.

From July 12-28, 2018, the “relentlessly inventive” (New York Magazine) new music collective Bang on a Can collaborates with MASS MoCA to present the 17th annual Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA. The festival is a musical utopia for innovative musicians and adventurous listeners in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, dedicated entirely to the creation, study, and performance of contemporary music. Featuring public performances, recitals, and lectures, the festival features over 60 cutting-edge composers and performers from around the globe, including over 42 fellows selected from a pool of more than 250 applicants from throughout the world. This year's featured guest composer is Steve Reich. MASS MoCA, 'a mind-blowing delight,' (New York Post) is one of the largest museums of contemporary art in the country, with exhibitions spaces dedicated to James Turrell, Laurie Anderson, Sol LeWitt, Anselm Kiefer and Jenny Holzer, as well as massive gallery spaces with exhibitions by Taryn Simon, Liz Glynn, Allison Janae Hamilton, and Rachel Howard among many others.
