A LETTER TO HARVEY MILK, a new musical which was a finalist in this year's prestigious Richard Rodgers Awards for Musical Theater, is one of 10 musical plays being presented by the 2012 New York Musical Theatre Festival Next Link Project (NYMF), which starts on July 9th. The musical is based on the short story, 'A Letter To Harvey Milk' by Lesléa Newman. Today, the New York Musical Theatre Festival hosted a press preview day, sampling its offerings this year, and on hand to preview MILK was the show's star, Leslie Kritzer (Sondheim on Sondheim, A Catered Affair Legally Blonde). SHLOMO The New Musical about the life and music of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach now playing at the The Museum of Jewish Heritage (36 Battery Place) through Friday May 9th, has announced a return engagement this summer. Due to popular demand, the musical will return to The Museum for another three-week engagement August 12th -31st.
SHLOMO The New Musical, about the life and music of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, plays a three-week limited engagement, April 22nd - May 9th at the Edmund J. Safra Hall at The Museum of Jewish Heritage (36 Battery Place). Featuring music by Carlebach, a book by Daniel S. Wise (Rent, producer of the world tour), lyrics and direction by David Schechter (Drama Desk nominee for Hannah Senesh) and additional material by Carlebach's daughter, Neshama Carlebach, SHLOMO The New Musical tells the story of the foremost innovator in Jewish Music of the 20th Century, and one of the most pivotal, unconventional and controversial Jewish personalities of the post WWII generation.
The Butterfly - adapted from Patricia Polacco's book of the same name by Charles Greenberg (Music) and Barbara Zinn Krieger (Book & Lyrics) and directed by David Schechter - will be presented by Making Books Sing, the New York-based company dedicated to turning culturally and historically significant books for young readers into musical works for the stage, with performances in the Bronx at the Lovinger Theatre at Lehman College from January 28 to February 1; in Brooklyn at the Goldstein Theatre at Kingsborough Community College from February 4 to 8; in Manhattan at Symphony Space from February 9 to 12; and in Queens at Laguardia Performing Arts Center at Laguardia Community College from February 14 to 15.
Lauren Glassberg, a features reporter and substitute co-anchor for WABC-TV's Eyewitness News - will read Patricia Polacco's book The Butterfly on Thursday, February 7th at 4:00pm at the Upper West Side Barnes & Noble (2289 Broadway at 82nd Street). This reading will give parents and children the opportunity to hear the work that has inspired the new family musical The Butterfly - adapted from Polacco's children's book, with Music by Charles Greenberg, Book & Lyrics by Barbara Zinn Krieger and Directed by David Schechter - before seeing it at Symphony Space (2537 Broadway at 95th Street) from February 9th through February 12th.
