On Tuesday, October 31, 2017, I attended the opening night of the Dresden Semperoper Ballett, under the artistic direction of Aaron Sean Watkin, at the Joyce Theater with great anticipation. I was excited to see contemporary ballet as it is presented in Europe. The flyer for this company describes its program, 'an elegant program that showcases classical ballet with a contemporary bend'. There was pointe work in David Dawson's two pieces and no shoes in the other two works. The dancers must have been chosen for their flexibility of spirit.
Constella OperaBallet return to the Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler's Wells this November with their award-winning Sideshows. An anarchic opera and ballet spectacular featuring dancing bears, mystical palm readers and explosive fire-eaters. Roll up! Roll up! For the most un-hinged circus show in town!

Pennsylvania Ballet and Artistic Director Angel Corella are proud to open the season on October 13 - 23 with Ben Stevenson's Cinderella sponsored by PECO. Three weeks later, Revolution, a triple - bill featuring the George Balanchine classicSquare Dance, David Dawson's The Third Light, and a World Premiere by Philadelphia-based choreographer Brian Sanders will run November 11 - 13.
Seattle's Pacific Northwest Ballet under the artistic direction of Peter Boal returned to New York City Center in February 2016 with an 'All Balanchine' program on the 24th and 25th followed by a triple bill, 'Contemporary Innovations', on the 26th and 27th. The latter, which I saw on the 26th, featured works by two choreographers who had at one time worked with William Forsythe as members of Ballett Frankfurt and a third piece by Forsythe himself. Forsythe's protegees created pieces that harked back to his own reinvention of classical ballet, yet went further in that direction with strikingly individual styles. The PNB dancers, superbly trained and impeccably rehearsed, gave world-class performances in all three of the evening's offerings. In particular, Angelica Generosa was a shining presence with superb technique. She is currently a member of the corps de ballet, but I see a promotion in her future.
