Ross Petty's annual pantomime has become, if anything, a tradition and staple in Toronto of the holiday season. As downtown storefronts are transformed from 'pumpkin spice' to 'naughty or nice,' the cast and creative team at Ross Petty Productions work on their whimsical, magical, and hilarious takes on traditional children's stories.
Stepping in to share the ugly crown with punked-out evil stepsister Shakiki, played by Cleopatra Williams (Jersey Boys, We Will Rock You), is Petty Panto alumni Bryn McAuley. Bryn landed her breakout role at the age of seven playing the title character in the animated tv series Caillou, and has since gone on to voice more than 40 different characters.
For Danielle Wade playing iconic, female characters on stage is a dream come true. Fresh off the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of The Wizard of OZ - which played Toronto during an extended sit down, Wade is trading her ruby slipper for ones made of glass in Ross Petty's annual pantomime production. This year's whimsical tale is Cinderella: The Gags to Riches Family Musical!
I am pleased to announce the nominees for the 2014 BroadwayWorld Toronto Regional Awards. The response this year from Toronto's theatre community and fans has been incredible. The BroadwayWorld Awards are an award decided by the fans - from nominations all the way to selecting the final winner.

Theatre20's production of COMPANY is now playing at the Berkeley Street Threatre in downtown Toronto, and the production - which opened on June 27 hits most of the right notes, but I found it to be lacking the finesse it needed to be the first class production it had the potential to be. The story should be a familiar one to many - a man in his mid thirties with commitment issues struggling to find meaning in his life. The plot is so standard, in fact, it's practically a cliche. In COMPANY, however, the single lifestyle is scrutinized under a microscope in a series of scenes focusing on the the protagonist, Bobby, and his interactions with his coupled friends. Bobby even quotes Socrates at one point, stating that 'the unexamined life is not worth living.'
BroadwayWorld has an exclusive first look at Theatre20's production of COMPANY. Tony Award-winning COMPANY, said by many to have launched the age of the modern musical, centres on Robert, a single man unable to commit to a steady relationship, the married couples who are his best friends, and his three on-again off-again girlfriends.
Yesterday, Theatre20 had their first preview performance of what is considered by many to be Stephen Sondheim's most iconic work, 'COMPANY'. Back when the company of 'COMPANY' were just beginning rehearsals, BroadwayWorld's Alan Henry had a chance to speak to Dan Chameroy (Bobby) about this production.
Theatre 20's highly-anticipated production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company will play the Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs from tonight, June 21 to July 13, 2014. This show has not been seen in Toronto in almost 30 years.
Last night Theatre20 hosted A Tase of 20: A Speakeasy Social at The National Club. The venue was transformed into a Speakeasy ('Singeasy') lounge where patrons got a 'taste' of what's coming up next for Theatre 20! Performers included founding artists Adam Brazier, Brent Carver and Nora McLellan, a Sondheim Jazz Project, Cadence, the Upper Canada Chorus and Theatre 20's 2014 Emerging Artist Ensemble.
