I watch YouTube videos of the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet before bed, so when I had the opportunity to see the company in the flesh at BAM, I jumped at the opportunity. Needless to say, I had high expectations from the versatile contemporary powerhouse that were mostly upheld.
International Dance Festival Birmingham 2014 (IDFB) drew to a spectacular close on 25 May with an outdoor performance of hip hop show B-Town. After a packed month of dance performances staged throughout the city, the biennial festival's co-producers, DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome, are thrilled to report on its many successes.
This year's Jacob's Pillow Dance Award, a coveted honor carrying a $25,000 cash prize, will be presented to choreographer John Heginbotham in recognition of his talent and outstanding contributions to the dance field. Heginbotham, an alumnus of The School at Jacob's Pillow, has garnered critical and popular acclaim for his contemporary works, eclectic and rich with “movement that exhibits sharpness, energy, formality and, yes, oddity” (Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times). His company, Dance Heginbotham, will perform the evening-length world premiere of Chalk and Soot in the Doris Duke Theatre July 30-August 3. In Chalk and Soot, Heginbotham joins forces with composer Colin Jacobsen to create a work featuring imaginative, theatrical choreography, live music performed by superstar string quartet Brooklyn Rider, the vocal stylings of Shara Worden (lead singer of My Brightest Diamond), and singer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane on harmonium.

Nancy Laurie, Founder and Board President of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, announced the appointment of Alexandra Damiani as the company's new Artistic Director effective immediately. Damiani has worked with Cedar Lake since 2005 as Ballet Master and Rehearsal Director of the 16-member troupe. Crystal Pite will join Cedar Lake as Associate Choreographer contributing a minimum of two works over the next three years.

Winning Works ticket holders will be notified by the Joffrey Ballet box office staff about the change of venue.
