Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company will open its 42nd annual tour August 4 with 'SHAME! Or The Doomsday Machine,' a rip-roaring musical in which the Theory of Relativity explains modern politics. Free performances will tour closed-off streets, parks and playgrounds throughout the five boroughs until September 16. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks. (Schedule follows at bottom of this document.)
Theater for the New City, Crystal Field, Executive Director, presents Cyberbabies: A Musical Dot.Comedy, a world premiere musical with book, music and lyrics by Craig Silver. Lissa Moira directs a cast of 14, including William Broderick, Jef Canter, Selear Duke, Katie Fann, Becca Gottlieb, Jordan Griffey, Zander Kirby, David "Zen" Mansley, Michael Maricondi, Olivia Medley, James Parks, Johnathan Fox Powers, Dani Westhead, and Amanda Yachechak. While Theater for the New City regularly celebrates show openings, it's gearing up for a special grand opening of its own: a handicapped accessible elevator.
To celebrate the official kick-off of Summer, Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, Co-founder and Artistic Director) will host the 23rd annual LOWER EAST SIDE FESTIVAL, a FREE Summer Arts Festivals at Theater for the New City (155 First Ave. at 10th St.). The festival will take place over Memorial Day Weekend, May 25 - 27, 2018 from 6pm - 1am and will feature theater, music, art, dance, video, film, aerial arts, poetry, magic and comedy with over 190 performances over the course of the weekend.

In her newest play, 'A Punk or a Gentleman,' playwright Andrea J. Fulton explores the complex psyche of a Black, middle-aged Don Juan who loves to captivate women but falls victim to physical abuse by the women he loves. The ten-character drama will be directed by Kymbali Craig for its world premiere, which will be presented by Theater for the New City from May 3 to 20.

'One Drop,' a family drama with music by Andrea J. Fulton, brings to life the politics of a young mixed-race man's 'passing' for white in post-Civil War Louisiana, illustrating the risks taken by those not afraid to love despite bigotry. The piece, inspired by the playwright's actual family history, tells the story of a family torn apart by racism but ultimately reunited. It debuted in Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival in 2010. TNC will present a revival of the play, directed by Sabura Rashid, from February 1 to 18 in honor of Black History Month.

Theater for the New City (TNC) presented a highly successful developmental production of 'Josh: The Black Babe Ruth' by Michael A. Jones last Spring in its small Cabaret Theater. In honor of Black History Month, TNC will re-mount the drama February 8 to 25, 2018 in its larger Cino Theater. Bette Howard directs. The play dramatizes the life, loves and ultimately the tragic decline of Josh Gibson, who was perhaps the greatest slugger of the Negro leagues and who, some say, died of a broken heart in 1947.

That's the idea behind 'Or Current Resident,' a new play by Joan Bigwood, which will be performed by Squeaky Bicycle Productions from February 3 to 25 at Theater for the New City, where it is a resident company.
