I recently read that unless material comes out of living experience, it does not live. The truth of this premise resonated clearly when I attended preview night for Orlando Shakespeare's final play of its regular season, VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, a show with an unmistakable heartbeat.

Good Theater the professional theater company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress Street, Portland will close its 14th season with the regional theater premiere of ACT ONE by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart. This weekend, local alternative theatre company L.I.P. Service Productions opened their newest work, LAUGHING WILD by Christopher Durang (author of the 2013 Tony Award-winning VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE). With only two speaking actors and a minimal stage, the oddball comedy centers around an strange, but unextraordinary event: a manic woman assaults an average man in the tuna fish aisle of a grocery store. Performed as two thirty-minute monologues and one thirty-minute scene, these over-the-top characters bounce back and forth like a pinball trying to rack up a bonus play in an arcade game. Although the style of comedy in LAUGHING WILD isn't necessarily my taste, I must admit I found myself laughing a number of times, especially as the stories eventually unfolded.

Sundance Institute today announced the eight new projects selected for its pilot Theatre Lab in the MENA region, held in Morocco, May 2016. The Lab is part of the Institute's international cultural exchange programs for independent artists, which include a new, multi-year commitment to support artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), broadening the work of its East African Theatre Exchange over the past 15 years. For the Lab, the Institute will provide promising, fresh voices from the U.S. and MENA region with a rigorous artistic retreat and new opportunities for cross-cultural discovery, artistic reflection and creative experimentation.
