Paper Mill Playhouse has just announced the cast and creative team for Disney's The Little Mermaid, based on the classic animated film of the same title. The American premiere of this brand new production will feature a revamped script, additional songs, a new physical production and an entirely fresh interpretation of the piece. Paper Mill Playhouse's reimagined production will play at partner theaters Kansas City Starlight and Pittsburgh CLO. Disney's The Little Mermaid will be directed by Glenn Casale with original choreography byJohn MacInnis. The cast includes acclaimed Broadway performers: Nick Adams (Prince Eric), Jessica Grove (Ariel), Liz McCartney (Ursula), Alan Mingo, Jr. (Sebastian) and Edward Watts (King Triton). Disney's The Little Mermaid will run at the Millburn, New Jersey, theater from May 29 through June 30, 2013. The official press opening is Sunday, June 2, at 7:00pm. Disney's The Little Mermaid is proudly sponsored by Bank of America. The cast and creative team met the press earlier this week and BroadwayWorld was there for the festivities. THE GIVER centers on young Jonas, who has been selected by the elders of his community to become the new Receiver of Memory. The old man known as The Giver has held the memory of all that has been stripped away - poverty, pain, war, strife - and now he must pass on that burden. Little by little, Jonas discovers the community has systematically given up much of what gives life its meaning: Color, music, truth and love. At the end of the story, Jonas faces a decision that will define him and set a path toward hope.
The Muny's Sound Of Music will close August 1. THE SOUND OF MUSIC was directed by Marc Bruni, with choreography by Liza Gennaro, musical direction by Ben Whiteley, set design by Michael Anania, and lighting design by F. Mitchell Dana.
It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I actually saw the stage version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Of course, I'd been exposed to the movie version long before that, but I never really enjoyed watching it until they started letterboxing the film for broadcast presentations, because the 'pan and scan' versions always ruined the beautiful vistas captured by the cinematographer. But, you don't have to worry about that at the Muny, which offers up its own 'widescreen' take on this classic musical (it is a big stage, after all), producing a solid and enjoyable outing fit for the entire family.
