Boston Children's Theatre Finishes Its Season With A Timely Classic

Boston Children's Theatre finishes off its 2017-2018 season with George Orwell's 1984. Literature on stage has been the theme for BCT's productions this past year. BCT opened its season with the New England premiere of Goosebumps the Musical: Phantom of the Auditorium, then brought The Velveteen Rabbit to life during the holidays. Now Boston Children's Theatre's pre-professional training program for teens, New England Theatreworks, is presenting Orwell's classic. Ironically, this classic appears to be as timely as ever.

Boston Children's Theatre Brings A Classic With Rhyme And Reason To Life

Boston Children's Theatre is no stranger to bringing favorite children's books to life on stage. In the past few years, Boston Children's Theatre has produced live adaptations of Curious George and the Golden Meatball, Miss Nelson Is Missing, Fancy Nancy, The Velveteen Rabbit, and most recently the New England Premiere of Goosebumps the Musical. This tradition continues with BCT's next production Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat.

According to artsintegrity.org, Howard Sherman writes that there has been an uproar surrounding a recent production of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest at Boston Children's Theatre. This debate has centered around one nude scene, which reportedly takes up 'less than one page of the acting edition script.' However, the ramifications of this acting and directorial decision have been much bigger than that.

Tommy Tune and Kate Snodgrass Win Elliot Norton Awards, Ceremony Tonight, 5/21

The Boston Theater Critics Association previously announced its nominations for the 30h Anniversary Elliot Norton Awards. The awards, which recognize excellence in Greater Boston theater, are to be presented tonight, May 21, at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Mainstage, 559 Washington Street, Boston.

Catherine Trieschmann, a Kansas-based playwright whose work has been produced globally at venues ranging from South Coast Repertory of Orange County, the Bush Theatre of London, and the New Theatre of Sydney, is the winner of the 2012 William Inge Theatre Festival's Otis Guernsey New Voices in the American Theatre Award.
