BWW Review: VOTE! THE MUSICAL - Mixed, The Final Count
by Gil Kaan - Jun 10, 2017

Above the Curve Theatre mounts a sturdy workshop production of VOTE! THE MUSICAL with loads of potential. Anthony Marquez (nicely underplaying laid-back skater/skier dude Mike) and Angela Cole (fetchingly limning a flirty Muffin) run away with the show's best scenes. Their seduction duet 'D Gates' registers Hot! and their reprise of 'Everyone Has a dream' arouses in the most ambitious sense.

BWW Review: FAILURE: A LOVE STORY Opens the Block Party Series at the Kirk Douglas Theatre
by Shari Barrett - Apr 21, 2017

'Failure: A Love Story' chronicles the lives, loves and deaths of the three Fail sisters (June Carryl, Margaret Katch, and Nicole Shalhoub) and the one man with the double moniker Mortimer Mortimer (Kurt Quinn) who fell in love with each of them but not at the same time. Set against the backdrop of 1920s Chicago, this touching, whimsical tale explores the impermanence of life and the permanence of love, especially among devoted family members. The 'failure' in the title refers to poor Mortimer's inability to ever marry any of the three sisters after falling in love with them, as the untimely deaths of the three sisters happen before any marriages can take place.

BWW Review: ALL SHOOK UP Searches for Love with the Music of Elvis Presley
by Shari Barrett - Mar 7, 2016

The iconic music of Elvis Presley inspired writer Joe Dipietro to create ALL SHOOK UP, a musical set in 1955 utilizing the rock 'n roll star's songs. The bottom line with Elvis's music is that it makes a lot of people very happy, even 50 years after it was recorded. And Dipietro thought, what other type of entertainment form does that? And that's when he came up with the Shakespeare comedies, which are very much about love and finding your joy, marriage, passion, and all the good stuff of life. And of course, frequent cases of mistaken identity!

Provocative, tender, and extremely moving, bare is a story of love, friendship, secrets, self-acceptance and the consequences that result from their decisions. With music by Damon Intrabartolo, book and lyrics by Jon Hartmere, SVCAC's production of bare: a pop opera will be the Ventura County debut of this incredibly moving theatrical event. Due to subject matter, this production is recommended for audiences over 14. Provocative, raw, and unyielding, 'bare' examines the consequences of baring a soul or hiding it from those who matter most.
