REVIEW: “Odd is a Gift from God” in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

The musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that has just landed at the Sands Theatre leans into celebrating a world of vivid invention. It keeps the heart of the beloved material and commits even further into its absurdity. It guarantees a night at the theatre that will leave you going “what…was…that.' A night you won't soon forget.

BWW Review: MACGYVER: THE MUSICAL at Stages Repertory

As the audience walks into MACGYVER THE MUSICAL at STAGES, the greeting they receive is full of '80s nostalgia. Primarily based on the TV series, the audience is reminded of the height of '80s fashion and pop culture. Jane Fonda's workout tape, teased hair, and denim are the beginnings of a great night of frivolity and fun as audience members become participants in this new camp classic.

BWW Review: The Curtain Falls On Musicals Tonight! With Hilarity and Warmth In CALAMITY JANE: A MUSICAL WESTERN

Often described as an off-Broadway (or off-off Broadway) version of Encores!, Musicals Tonight! presents its 100th and final production, CALAMITY JANE: A MUSICAL WESTERN, at the Lion Theater. Currently in its 20th season, the series received a Village Voice Obie award and grant in 2004. Unlike other revivals which substantially alter old musicals to appeal to modern audiences, Mel Miller's brainchild and labor of love allows a new generation to enjoy the lesser-known works of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and the Gerswhins, among others, in their original form. Full disclosure: I have no use for Westerns in any genre (including literature) and find Oklahoma impossibly hokey and tedious. (I do like 'O What a Beautiful Morning.') The characters and plot of this by-comparison unknown musical are to me far more interesting than Oklahoma! Don't buy a ticket to CALMITY JANE: A MUSICAL WESTERN because it's the final installment of Musicals Tonight!. Buy a ticket because it's a worthy musical skillfully rendered by a strong cast.

BWW Review: New Rep's Season of Resilience: MAN OF LA MANCHA

New Repertory Theatre's 2017-2018 season is labeled Resilience, and it doubles down on the theme with its current production of MAN OF LA MANCHA. The 1965 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, which was based on the play I, DON QUIXOTE, ran for 2,328 performances, has been revived on Broadway four times, and was subsequently adapted for a film. This enduring piece of musical theater is also the story of one man's resilience as he maintains his idealistic quest despite the odds against him.
