Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, handed out top honors to 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska at this afternoon's 29th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Blue Jasmine, Fruitvale Station, Blue is the Warmest Color, Short Term 12, This is Martin Bonner and 20 Feet From Stardom also received awards at the ceremony, which is held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.

Arizona Author to Release 4th Book, a Paranormal Middle Grade

A book of mystery, history and love.
Brick Cave Books, the publishing imprint of Brick Cave Media, and Arizona Author Sharon Skinner are proud to announce the imminent release of 'Mirabella and the Faded Phantom' (ISBN: 1938190165), Ms Skinner's 4th book, at the 2014 Tucson Festival of Books March 15th and 16th in Tucson at the University of Arizona. Sharon will be located in the Brick Cave Media booth during the show, as well as conducting an author's signing event in the Author's Pavillion (schedule available in the TFOB Program).
About the book:
When twelve-year old Mirabella and her mother move into Great Aunt Clovinia's old house, Mirabella discovers they aren't the only ones living there. A mysterious faded specter haunts the place. When the house is scheduled for demolition, Mirabella must unravel the mystery of the ghost's identity, and free it from the old house before it's too late. The book deals in themes of relationship and loss, as well as the historical significance of the disease Polio.
In addition to the launch event in Tucson, Sharon has scheduled a series of appearances through the coming year, including the LA Time Festival of Books, in Los Angeles, Emerald City Comic-con in Seattle, Phoenix Comic-con in Phoenix and a number of local bookstores.
About Sharon Skinner: Sharon Skinner holds an M.A. in Creative Writing. Her work has been published in a number of local, national and international publications. She previously served for eight years as the Executive Editor of Anthology magazine, a small press literary magazine published in Mesa, Arizona. Sharon is an active member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) and serves as the Assistant Regional Advisor for SCBWI AZ. Mirabella and the Faded Phantom (2014) is her first middle-grade paranormal. It is her fourth book overall, following In Case You Didn't Hear Me The First Time (2010), The Healer's Legacy (2012) and The Nelig Stones (2013). She is also the co-author of The Chronicles of Tavara Tinker (2013) with writer Bob Nelson.

Actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the 86th Academy Awards nominations this morning, Thursday, January 16. Boone Isaacs and Hemsworth unveiled the nominations at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, where hundreds of media representatives from around the world gathered.
