BWW Blog: Gift of Time - Part 1

Theatre as an art is inherently collaborative. It takes a team. What happens when we are separated from our ensemble? How can we continue to create in isolation? Most of the time the creativity in our craft is assigned. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't negate our art by any means, but as theatre makers, we are usually creating in the context of a larger project. We often have little control over the big picture: such as being cast as a role in a musical or asked to design the set for a specific play.

BWW Review: MATTHEW BOURNE'S SWAN LAKE, Sadler's Wells

It's no understatement to say Sir Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake changed the dance landscape back in 1995 when it first premiered. Any Swan Lake is a juggernaut of a production but Bourne's added layers of storytelling, engaging new characters and unique reimagining for a 21st Century audience cemented a?oeiconica?? status, a word I use sparingly but it's fully justified here. The first in a sequence of Bourne's work to be seen on screen during this time of lockdown which will see releases of Romeo and Juliet and The Car Man, as well as this 2018 production of arguably Bourne's best-known work.

Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards Premiere New Video for 'Corduroy Jacket'

Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards release their video for 'Corduroy Jacket' today, the first video release from their upcoming album, BITTER BETTER. The album finds the group drawing on their extensive string music background and knowledge of folk and roots music and incorporating an pop sensibility that expands on what is usually considered indie folk. The result is an album that incorporates dance-worthy foundational grooves, synth, and loops to push the boundaries of the genre. The band has been invited to support The Mountain Goats on their extended US tour, which kicks off in late April; scroll down for complete dates.

BWW Review: SWAN LAKE, Royal Opera House

Enough words have been given to the controversy surrounding this run of Liam Scarlett's Swan Lake, its first revival since a largely triumphant premiere in 2018. I don't wish to dwell further here, and instead want to focus on what was one of the most memorable nights at the theatre in quite some time thanks to some virtuoso central performances, a faultless corps de ballet, and the transporting set and costumes of John Macfarlane.

BWW Review: SWAN LAKE, Bolshoi Ballet in Cinema

As part of the 243rd season of the iconic ballet company, several productions by the Bolshoi Ballet are again being broadcast on cinema screens across sixty countries. As one of seven of these ballets, Swan Lake is surely the most iconic, having debuted at the Bolshoi theatre in 1877. Tchaikovsky's incredibly evocative score wasn't enough to secure initial success, but for many people today, Swan Lake is ballet.

Jazzy New Rendition Of SWAN LAKE Lands At Greater Boston Stage Company February 15

Since its premiere in 1877, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake has been a staple of dance companies all over the world. Its stunning choreography, lush score, and compelling tale of metamorphosis attracts audiences year after year. And like Shakespeare's plays, each production reinvents the classic tale in myriad ways: from more classic takes produced by the Bolshoi Ballet in the early to mid-20th century, to Matthew Bourne's modern interpretation featuring two male swans, to Natalie Portman's dark turn in the movie a?oeBlack Swan.a??

BWW Review: BWW REVIEW: MATTHEW BOURNE REIMAGINES SWAN LAKE at New York City Center

The first performance of Matthew Bourne's contemporary Swan Lake was performed at the Sadler's Wells Theater, London, in 1995. It has endured twenty-five years with the staying power of a new classic -- for very good reason. Bourne has reinvented the swans from maidens who have been turned into beautiful swans by an evil sorcerer, to male swans, summoned by the dreams and desires of a pampered, regimented prince, no sorcerer in sight. Much has been made of this and the homoerotic overtones that appear at times; however, there is much more to it than that as a piece of theater. It is a psychological drama which explores, among other things, celebrity and Royalty in today's world.
