Matt Damon to Receive Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) is pleased to announce that award-winning actor and producer Matt Damon will receive the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film presented by Newegg at the 2017 AMD British Academy Britannia Awards.

Liza Jessie Peterson's THE PECULIAR PATRIOT Opens at National Black Theatre

Liza Jessie Peterson's hilarious and poignant one woman, multimedia show The Peculiar Patriot opened to standing ovation Sunday at Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT), kicking off the historical Harlem theater's 49th season, Black to the Future. NBT and Hi-ARTS have joined forces to present the play, a blistering critique of the American criminal justice system. Peterson, who worked for nearly two decades at Rikers Island in various capacities and was featured in Ava DuVernay's Oscar-nominated documentary 13th, wrote the show, which is directed by Talvin Wilks. The Peculiar Patriot runs through October 1.

The Huntington Theatre Company presents a provocative new drama A Guide for the Homesick, by Huntington Playwriting Fellow Ken Urban and directed by Tony Award nominee Colman Domingo (Dragon King in Journey to the West and Jim in Well at the Huntington, Mr. Bones in The Scottsboro Boys on Broadway, and Victor Strand in AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead").

BWW Previews: TNT to Adapt THE FIFTH SEASON by N.K. Jemisin for Television

This is the greatest time for fantasy fans. The genre is hotter than ever, and Hollywood is racing to scoop up best-selling sci-fi/fantasy series, hoping to share some of the success HBO experienced with Game of Thrones. In just the past month, BroadwayWorld has covered announcements on adaptations for Octavia Butler's DAWN and Nnedi Okorafor's WHO FEARS DEATH. Now, TNT wants in on the action and has just announced that it is adapting N.K. Jemisin's The Broken Earth Trilogy for TV.

National Black Theatre's 49th Season Heads 'Black to the Future'

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre's 49th season cedes the floor to modern-day griots with gripping, one-person tales capturing the trauma and triumph of a people. In a nod to the African tradition of the storyteller and historian who inspires and uplifts, the season is anchored by two one-person shows, The Peculiar Patriot, by Liza Jessie Peterson, a coproduction with Hi-ARTS, and Sancho by Paterson Joseph, a coproduction with Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) and Pemberley Productions. Themed "Black to the Future," the 49th season-which includes workshop productions by resident playwrights-seeks to take stock of the present and look to the past to predict and help shape a brighter future for Black people.

First look! A WRINKLE IN TIME Movie Stills!

Yesterday brought an in-depth first look at the upcoming movie A Wrinkle in Time, based on the beloved Newbery winning novel by Madeleine L'Engle. The movie is directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th). The movie will hit theaters March 9, 2018. The story centers around Meg (played by newcomer Storm Reid), a girl brave enough to go on an intergallactic journey in a desperate search to find her father (Chris Pine). She's joined by her friend Calvin (Levi Miller) and brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe). The trio are sent on their way by three immortal, angelic-like beings, Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey).
