Memphis opened in Toronto this past Wednesday at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Hometown boy Sergio Trujillo came up from the Great White Way to celebrate with Dancap President Aubrey Dan and the Tony Award from when the show won Best Musical in 2010. On Sunday night the stars of Toronto's musical theatre scene came out to pay tribute to Des McAnuff as he received an honourary doctorate from Ryerson University for his contribution to the arts over the last few decades. Including cast members from the original Toronto production of Jersey Boys and the current Stratford Festival production of Jesus Christ Superstar, the evening was filled with good music and fantastic tales from Des' extraordinary life. PRINCE OF BROADWAY, a new musical celebrating legendary Broadway director and producer Harold 'Hal' Prince, is in development now, aiming for a Toronto production in the summer of 2012, prior to opening on Broadway that fall.
