Photo Flash: SHIDA Celebrates Off-Broadway Opening

The new musical SHIDA, written and performed by Jeannette Bayardelle -- whose Broadway appearances include leading roles in THE COLOR PURPLE and HAIR -- will receive its world-premiere this summer Off-Broadway as an Ars Nova Summer Fling (511 W. 54 St. in Manhattan). Previews began July 19 and SHIDA's official opening night was this Wednesday, July 31. The Off-Broadway limited engagement runs through August 28. Coleavens Industries will present Lies We Tell Ourselves (when flamethrowers aren't enough) as part of the 17th annual New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC. Premiering at FringeNYC, Lies We Tell Ourselves will be presented at The Players Theatre (115 Macdougal Street, Fringe venue #17).

Westport Country Playhouse will stage the World Premiere of 'Oblivion,' a provocative new play about parents and teenagers, and the gulf that often exists between them, by Carly Mensch, writer for Showtime's 'Nurse Jackie' and 'Weeds,' and directed by Mark Brokaw, currently represented on Broadway with 'Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.' The coming-of-age comedy-drama runs from August 20 through September 8.

Critically acclaimed theatre company The Playwrights Realm has announced the cast and creative team for the New York premiere of Lauren Yee's new play The Hatmaker's Wife, directed by recent OBIE Award winner Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812). The Hatmaker's Wife marks the first Playwrights Realm production at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater (416 West 42nd Street) in midtown Manhattan, following previous engagements in several downtown Off-Broadway venues. Previews begin Tuesday, August 27, for an opening Thursday, September 5.
