New York City Opera continues its 2016 - 17 season on November 17, 18, 19 and 20, 2016 with the New York premiere of Tobin Stokes and Heather Raffo's Fallujah, the first opera written about the Iraq War experience.

The Los Angeles Master Chorale brings the gift of music to Walt Disney Concert Hall in December with a series of festive "Christmas in Los Angeles" concerts. The varied programs blend traditional carols, Baroque-era madrigals, and new works alongside the popular annual opportunity for the audience to sing-along to Handel's majestic oratorio, Messiah.

The Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC), in one of the most highly anticipated collaborations of the season, joins forces with the renowned period instrument ensemble Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra and the acclaimed Los Angeles Children's Chorus to present two historically informed performances of Bach's towering masterwork St. Matthew Passion, conducted by LAMC Artistic Director Grant Gershon, tonight, January 31, 2 pm, and Sunday, February 1, 2015, 7 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Adding a final flourish to the holiday season, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, presents two concerts of Handel's Messiah on Wednesday, December 17, 7:30 pm, and Sunday, December 21, 2014, 7 pm, at Disney Hall. Featuring 40 members of the acclaimed chorus, orchestra and four gifted soloists from the Chorale's ranks, the concert provides the opportunity to hear this riveting oratorio - rich with soaring high notes, powerful bass, majestic brass and lush orchestrations - performed by what many critics consider to be the best chorus in the country. The soloists are Christina Bristow, soprano; Nike St. Clair, mezzo soprano; Arnold Livingston Geis, tenor; and Chung Uk Lee, baritone. Composed in a mere 24 days, Handel's 1741 English-language oratorio continues to be the composer's most popular work and may be the most performed classical work of all time.

Angelenos are invited to belt out the "Hallelujah" chorus - and all of the other glorious choruses from Handel's beloved Messiah - at the Los Angeles Master Chorale's 33rd Annual Messiah Sing-Along on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, 7:30 pm, at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Music Director Grant Gershon conducts the 2,200-member audience, which serves as the choir, a professional chamber orchestra and four professional soloists from the Chorale: Zanaida Robles, soprano, Nike St. Clair, mezzo soprano, Arnold Livingston Geis, tenor, and Chung Uk Lee, bass. Sopranos, altos, tenors and basses of all skill levels - even those with absolutely no singing experience - are welcome. Messiah scores are available for $10 at the door.

I am a huge fan of Louisa May Alcott's story of the March sisters and both films of Little Women, the one from the early 30s starring Katharine Hepburn and Joan Bennett and then the 1949 revival starring June Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor, Janet Leigh and Margaret O'Brien. I'm partial to the latter film, only because I love everyone in that cast, and it was in glorious technicolor. It also boasted Mary Astor as Marmee and Peter Lawford as Laurie.
