BWW Review: A CHORUS LINE at Ivoryton Playhouse

A CHORUS LINE, the hit musical about dancers auditioning for a Broadway show played for 6,137 performances in its original run and, depending on who you ask, there are numerous reasons for that. First, and foremost, audiences connected with the people on stage and their experiences. They saw their own wishes and dreams played out through the diverse and talented group of people assembled. The second reason is because it offers a unique variety of energetic musical numbers (with some amazing dancing, naturally) interspersed with dramatic monologues that get at the heart of the human condition. And third, and probably most importantly - it is simply a wildly entertaining musical. I am pleased to say that all of these elements (and more!) are present in the current production of A CHORUS LINE at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Ivoryton, CT.

EDINBURGH 2018 - BWW Review: LOOP, Underbelly Cowgate

In Loop, three generations of the same family are all united by their love of the music of their own time, but often struggle to relate to one another. Music is the the way a generation defines itself, but the hits of one decade are so often dismissed as incomprehensible rubbish by those still obsessed by the music of their own heyday, drawing this theatrical compilation album into a metaphor for an inter-generational failure to connect.

Playwright S. Karlan Returns To 13th Street Repertory Theatre

Strange situations and encounters are something that happens in many of S. Karlan's short plays. A strange connection here, a misunderstood relationship there, the question of love and gender, robotic partners, and pretty much anything that leaves you wondering what the hell is really going on make up some of his stories. For audience members, there is always one play that stands out the most, and usually you hear them talking about it on the way out. 'He should have just loved her,' said one older man after one of his shows last March. 'So what if he wasn't sure that she was a man or a woman.' People have vastly wide opinions about the material. But if the idea is to create a dialogue, S. Karlan's play do just that.
