The Tony-nominated Lincoln Center production of the classic musical, My Fair Lady, is headed for the West End! Bartlett Sher's loverly production will begin performances at the English National Opera's London Coliseum in May 2022.

So many musicals wish they were as cool, progressive, provocative as Spring Awakening still is since its premiere Off-Broadway in 2006. More than 15 years later and a bunch of awards garnered across the world, it’s still as fresh and stunning in Rupert Goold’s monumental production at the Almeida. Based on a 19th Century banned German play and delicately exploring topics like sex, homosexuality, abortion, and rape in a disapproving, hyper-conservative community, Steven Sater (book and lyrics) and Duncan Sheik’s (music) rock musical has become an evergreen show that society as it is won't be able to surmount thematically.

From Jeff Whitty, the creator of Avenue Q, and the Scissor Sister's Jake Shears and John Garden comes ARMISTEAD MAUPIN'S TALES OF THE CITY, THE MUSICAL based on Armistead Maupin's landmark series of novels about San Francisco in the 70s. The presentation is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the premiere musical staging at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater in 2011.

We’ve certainly come a long way in the “theatre filmed from individual homes” genre of online shows. After a hit debut in the US last year, the musical comedy web series A Killer Party has been adapted for UK audiences featuring an all-star cast headed by Jason Manford, Debbie Kurup, and Rachel Tucker.

A saucy French maid doing the Charleston with a handsome chap in tennis whites sets the scene for the most delightful escapism in town: Matthew White's gossamer-light revival of Sandy Wilson's 1953 love letter to the Roaring Twenties. It was once the third-longest-running stage musical, and boosted Julie Andrews' career on Broadway.

THE BOY FRIEND, Sandy Wilson's all-singing all-dancing love letter to 1920s musical comedies, returns for the first major London revival in over 10 years. Matthew White's revival runs at Menier Chocolate Factory until 7 March, 2020.

London is never short of temptations, whether splashy West End shows, epic dramas or bold fringe offerings. Menier Chocolate Factory presents their major revival of Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend running at the theatre over Christmas. Matthew White directs a cast including Jack Butterworth (Bobby van Husen), Janie Dee (Mme Dubonnet), Adrian Edmondson (Lord Brockhurst), Tiffany Graves (Hortense), Dylan Mason (Tony), Amara Okereke (Polly) and Issy van Randwyck (Lady Brockhurst). The production opens on 3 December, with previews from 22 November, and runs until 7 March 2020.

UK Theatre in 2019 was like a box of choccies made by Mr Wonka - a delightful set of surprises, with just a hint of menace to keep you on your toes. Many tremendous achievements did not make the BroadwayWorld shortlist, but many did, and here's my pick of them.

According to The Stage, the inaugural Black British Theatre Awards took place at Old Finsbury Town Hall in London on October 27.
