Wicked, the winner of over 100 international awards, opened this week at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. I was lucky enough to attend Thursday night's performance which capped off by a standing ovation and thunderous applause.
This isn't Madison's first Wicked rodeo.
The show has come to town three times since 2010, yet, Overture Hall was still filled to the brim with eager audience members last night.
Why?
Because Wicked is visually spectacular, musically varied, and has relevant lessons to be learned.
The Broadway hit musical WICKED opened at the Music Hall October 7, enchanting the Kansas City audiences. Joe Mantello directs the Broadway Across America production of the longest running Broadway show in history. Stephen Schwartz wrote the music, lyrics, and Winnie Holzman the book for the musical, which is the first to gross over $3 Million in one week.
The WICKED Tour will welcome Jake Boyd as Fiyero, Wendy Worthington as Madame Morrible and Stuart Zagnit as The Wizard beginning Wednesday, August 26 at ASU Gammage in Tempe.
I don't think many theater nerds need to argue the virtues of Stephen Schwartz's hit show "Wicked" currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. It's one of those shows that's widely and verbally loved by aficionados and general theatergoers alike. So when the tour comes through town it's bound to have the rich and powerful voices needed to blast those wonderful songs into the rafters. And this tour is no exception. But while this tour also boasts two wonderful leads who also manage some brilliant and layered storytelling in their characters, some of the supporting players felt lacking and flat in that aspect making this go around with the show not as awe-inspiring as past viewings.
For some reason, people have brought a great many little girls to see WICKED. It didn't seem to me a particularly child-friendly novel, but since the musical stage production shares about as much with Gregory Maguire's novel as Disney's Little Mermaid did with the story written by Hans Christian Andersen, that's probably fine.
WICKED is back in town and what a joy that is. The Good Witch and the Bad Witch, the Flying Monkeys and the Fire Breathing Dragon, the Wizard of Oz and the Yellow Brick Road: musical theatre at its best.
Go backstage at the Adrienne Arsht Center's Ziff Ballet Opera House and see it transform into OZ for WICKED's return to Miami. WICKED will play at the Arsht Center from March 11-March 29, after a record-breaking run at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. Watch as the Munchkinland Tour takes over Miami and gives the Arsht Center an Ozian makeover.
The producers of WICKED announced today that it has broken two all-time North American Touring box office records by grossing $2,864,958 for the eight-performance week-ending March 1, and $3,266,527 for the nine-performance week-ending March 8, during its recent return to Atlanta's Fox Theatre February 18 - March 8. These records were previously set by The Book of Mormon in February 2014, also at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.
If crowd appeal is any indication of a show's worth, Wicked is a multimillion-dollar treasure. WICKED's second national tour, 'The Munchkinland Tour,' flew into the Fox Theatre on Wednesday, February 18 to play a 3-week engagement, marking the show's fourth engagement at the historic Atlanta venue. Not surprisingly, this production did not disappoint.
Good morning, BroadwayWorld! Because we know all our readers eat, sleep and breathe Broadway, what could be better than waking up to it? Today's big news: PARADE comes to Lincoln Center tonight!
