Theatrical Innovator Incubator Launches With Six Teams

PlayGround announced this evening the six teams of Bay Area artists selected as finalists for the inaugural PlayGround Innovator Incubator. The new year-long initiative will provide a comprehensive and integrated suite of more than $50,000 in tools and resources -- including fiscal sponsorship, one-on-one mentoring, free and discounted performance and rehearsal space, and co-marketing -- in support of the development of six new innovative theatre companies and the launch of their first season.

Stage Door Players Continue Season with THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO

Dunwoody's own professional theatre, STAGE DOOR PLAYERS, kicks off the 2019 leg of their Sapphire Season with a celebration of heritage in Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award award winning THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO, directed by Mira Hirsch. Originally designed as a series of vignettes based on Uhry's childhood memories, this character study of intra-ethnic bias and identity was commissioned for the 1996 Summer Olympics, seeing its premiere at the Alliance Theatre. 

Casting Announced For Interrobang Theatre's UTILITY

Interrobang Theatre Project is pleased to announce casting for its Midwest premiere of Emily Schwend's drama UTILITY, an intimate look at an East Texas woman's struggle to make ends meet, directed by Artistic Director Georgette Verdin*.

PlayCo Announces Cast And Creative Team For Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas' RECENT ALIEN ABDUCTIONS

The Play Company has announced the full cast of the New York premiere of Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas' Recent Alien Abductions (February 21-March 24). Through magnetic characterization and playful yet shattering storytelling, Recent Alien Abductions explores how families-and societies-are haunted by their pasts. Recent Alien Abductions was an acclaimed highlight of the 2017 Humana Festival for New American Plays, where it was hailed as a "dark and unsettling…shape-shifter, a mystery to be unfurled, and ultimately a very human story" (WFPL News Louisville). Performances take place February 21-March 24 at Walkerspace, 46 Walker Street, New York.

Lookingglass Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Act(s) of God, by Ensemble Member Kareem Bandealy, directed by Ensemble Member Heidi Stillman. Act(s) of God runs February 13 April 7, 2019 at Lookingglass Theatre Company, located inside Chicago's historic Water Tower Water Works, 821 N. Michigan Ave. at Pearson. The press performances are February 22 and February 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Sacred Fools Presents The West Coast Premiere Of TOO HEAVY FOR YOUR POCKET

Sacred Fools Theater Company is excited to continue its 22st season with the West Coast Premiere of Too Heavy for Your Pocket written by Jireh Breon Holder and directed by Michael Shepperd. "We have been tracking Too Heavy For Your Pocket since its world premiere, and were deeply affected by the poetry and humanity on display in Jiren's work," former Artistic Director Bryan Bellomo says. "We are honored to bring a west coast premiere to Los Angeles, and thrilled to finally have the opportunity to partner with Michael A. BWW Interview: Sierra Boggess Talks EVER AFTER at Alliance Theatre

There's enough excitement in Atlanta this month to fill a fleet of pumpkin-carriages as Alliance Theatre mounts the highly-anticipated regional premiere of Ever After, a musical adaptation of the popular 1998 film of the same name which made its premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse in 2015. Ever After, loosely based on the Cinderella fairy tale, tells the story of Danielle de Barbarac, the Cinderella-esque young daughter of a 16th-century landowner who's forced into slavery by her stepmother after the unexpected death of her father. When a chance encounter with a prince stirs up considerable excitement for the young servant girl, Danielle finds that she might have the strength to take on her stepmother…and the world. Broadway diva Sierra Boggess, most known for her acclaimed turns as Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera, will take on the role of the vibrant Danielle. BroadwayWorld caught up with Boggess to talk about the show.

AN OCTOROON Announced At Actor's Express

Actor's Express presents An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Directed by Donya K. Washington, Associate Producer at the Alliance Theatre, this wildly imaginative new work turns a 19th century melodrama on its ear in a riotous romp that hurls the antebellum south into direct collision with 21st century cultural politics. "Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is one of the most exciting playwrights writing for the American theatre today. This play uses crazy theatricality to cast a critical eye on the modern world through the lens of the past," says Artistic Director Freddie Ashley.
