San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company opens its 2013-14 season with a reprisal of Diablo Actors' Ensemble's 2011 production of Alfred Uhry's DRIVING MISS DAISY. Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize, DRIVING MISS DAISY traces the evolving relationship between an elderly Southern Jewish matron and her African-American chauffeur in Atlanta during the mid-20th century. After wrecking yet another car, Daisy Werthan is informed by her son, Boolie, that he has hired a chauffeur for her, a proud, soft-spoken black man named Hoke whom she immediately dislikes and who, in turn, is equally unimpressed with her. As the play progresses over 25 years, the two develop an unlikely bond despite their mutual differences, growing closer to, and more dependent upon, one another.

Nathan Lane, Harold Prince, Angela Lansbury, Laura Osnes, Harriet Harris, Kate Burton, Kristine Nielsen, Alfred Uhry will salute actress Dana Ivey and arts patron Barbara Fleischman at The Acting Company's Gala on Monday, October 21 at Capitale. Ms. Ivey will receive the John Houseman Award recognizing her profound commitment to the development of American actors and a national audience for the theater. Ms. Fleischman will be presented the Warburg Humanitarian Award for her outstanding philanthropic endeavor and support of the arts. Harriet Harris (Cinderella) and Barclay Collins are Gala Chairs, Nathan Lane (The Nance) and Hal Prince (21 Tony Award winner) will present the awards; Stephen DeRosa (Boardwalk Empire) will host, Laura Osnes (Cinderella) will perform. Tributes will be offered by a host of celebrities. The Arden Theatre opened their twenty-sixth season with a stellar production of PARADE. This musical takes place in 1913 and tells the story of Leo Frank who was accused of murdering a thirteen year old girl, Mary Phagan. This show grapples with the trial of Leo Frank, and the racial environment that surrounded the trial in Georgia. PARADE depicts the resentments and fears held by many Georgians during the early twentieth century. The Arden's production of PARADE, under the direction of Terrance Nolan, is powerful, thought provoking, and well executed.

Alfred Uhry's Pulizer Prize winning play Driving Miss Daisy, now running through September 29th at the Smithtown Center For Performing Arts, is one to remember. The heart of this story follows the relationship of Daisy Werthen and Hoke Colburn over the spam of twenty five years (from 1948 - 1973). It examines race and religious prejudices, but ultimately looks at human relationships as a whole.

Having recently demolished another car, Daisy Werthan is informed by her son that she must rely on the services of a proud, soft-spoken black man named Hoke whom she immediately regards with disdain and who, in turn, is equally unimpressed with her. In a series of absorbing scenes spanning 25 years, the two develop an unlikely bond despite their mutual differences, growing closer to, and more dependent upon, one another.
