The 2017 Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, riding the wake of its inaugural success in 2015, is returning to wow the Windy City again, January 19-29, 2017.
If you've had enough of the holiday cheer and are in desperate need of a chaotic romp, you could do a whole lot worse than Pointless Theatre's whimsical production of Alfred Jarry's anarchic satire, King Ubu. Decked out in costumer Ivania Stack's fuzzy, teddy-bear pajamas, the cast crackles with the energy of the cocky, petulant high-schooler that Jarry once was. The result is a 2-hour tour of Shakespeare as interpreted by a drug-addled adolescent.

It would be fairly difficult to not know what's going on with the political campaign these days especially all the asinine things a certain candidate keeps saying which have been fodder for every news cycle and comedian for months. So I guess it was just a matter of time before we get a bit of theater about him which we have with Theater Schmeater's world premiere play of Nick Edwards' "TRUMP The KING or POTUS DRUMPH: Another Sh**ty Adaptation of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi which May or May Not Resonate with a Contemporary American Audience". And while the show offered up a few laughs I mostly walked away with two major problems with the piece, one structural and one personal (which others may well encounter too) but we'll get to those.
Privacy. Torture. Love. Gluttony. Truth. War. Hunger. Flatulence. 2+2=5. Firehouse's world premiere of UBU 84 will be adapted and directed by James Ricks.
What do toilet brushes, thought police, green candles, and the Ministry of Truth have in common? The revolutionary imaginations of Alfred Jarry (UBU ROI) and George Orwell (1984) are blended together in a hybrid mash-up of two classics about power, hunger, corruption, and obscenity.

It's the time-honored story of what happens when a big fat idiot is put in charge of a country, with lots of war, blood, guts, food fights, magic, shouting, puppets, chaos, hilarity, horror and the just plain bizarre sprinkled into the mix.
