New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players 44th season kicks off with Gilbert & Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard which tells the story of a falsely accused prisoner in the Tower of London, the two girls who loved him, and an out of work itinerant jester in grand and colorful fashion - with humor and a touch of pathos. Even though Sheldon Harnick was playing the violin in his High School's Gilbert & Sullivan productions… 'I could still hear the lyrics', he wrote in his alumni magazine of Northwestern University. Harnick continued, 'At that time I was turned on by the patter songs, so I began to familiarize myself with Gilbert and Sullivan. I was more fascinated by the virtuosity than anything else. Little by little, I also realized what a fine poet Gilbert was and how imaginative he was, even in the slower songs. So he became an enormous influence.'
Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan, was a lyrical wizard, crafting rhyme scheme and word play that titillates audiences still today - more on that here. His influence has burst through the walls of the theater, permeating myriad markets. And with his influence as far reaching as South Park, it's safe to say that today's lyricists are finding inspiration from him as well: enter Sheldon Harnick.
