HEDY! THE LIFE & INVENTIONS OF HEDY LAMARR Returns to Alexander Upstairs

HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr explores the life, inventions and person of Hedy Lamarr, Viennese-born Hollywood film star of the 1930s-1950s. Known as The Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Hedy Lamarr stored away knowledge of munitions while married to Austrian arms dealer, Fritz Mandl. She employed this knowledge to support the US Navy's war effort during WWII by inventing The Secret Communication System with composer George Antheil, to make torpedoes more accurate. Also referred to as Frequency Hopping or Spread Spectrum Technology, her invention is used today in cell phones, WiFi, CDMA, GPS, Bluetooth and a myriad of other wireless systems.

Photo Flash: BEDBUG Has Awakened at Medicine Show Theatre

One of New York oldest experimental theaters, Medicine Show Theatre, continues its exploration of Russian theater with an engrossing production of Vladimir Mayakovsky's 1929 play, The Bedbug.  Ashley Wren Collins directs this production. Collins received her MFA from the American Repertory Theater / Moscow Art Theatre School IATT at Harvard. This Twilight Zonian style tale tells the story of a Russian worker awakening after 50 years in cryogenic sleep to a not so vaguely communist future, where passion, vice, and even love is ancient history.

August Strindberg Repertory to Stage DAMASCUS II, 3/12-4/2

From March 12 to April 2, August Strindberg Repertory will present Strindberg's 'Damascus II,' adapted by Edgar Chisholm, directed by Robert Greer. This is the second installment of the three-part work in which Strindberg first introduced true surrealism to the stage in the theatrical representation of the dream. Strindberg's tale of life in decadent artists' circles of 1890s Sweden will be brought to life in 1960s California and its leading character, an alienated writer, has been re-envisioned as an author modeled on Amiri Baraka.

BWW Reviews: I KNOW WHAT BOYS WANT Favors Melodrama Over Nuance

New York based theatre company Ego Actus is staging the world premiere of award-winning playwright Penny Jackson's I KNOW WHAT BOYS WANT. The play is a thought provoking cautionary tale that explores the seedy underbelly of cell phone camera surveillance and how once something is shared online, it never truly goes away.

August Strindberg Rep Presents KRISTINA, Now thru 3/29

Strindberg's 'Kristina' (1903) is the unacknowledged basis for the Garbo film 'Queen Christina.' In this skillful study of a neurotic and complex woman, Strindberg reveals the power of his dramatic conceptions and the mastery he had acquired of his craft. The play was the last of a series of Strindberg's later historical dramas that are among the most powerful plays of the kind produced in modern times. August Strindberg Repertory Theatre will present the masterpiece at the Gene Frankel Theatre tonight, March 13 to 29 translated from the Swedish by Wendy Weckwerth, directed by Whitney Aronson.
