BWW Review: NEXT TO NORMAL at Fulton Theatre

Tolpegin is magnificent in her portrayal. So often...an actor's depiction of mental illness is totally externalized...sobbing hysterical laughter, jerky body movements. Tolpegin doesn't rely on such tricks. We learn about her through her dialogue and song, but we are not always privy to her private internal struggles and suffering. This is the difference between a caricature and a character.

It has been 18 years between John Stefano's performances as John Adams in 1776 and his return on April 7 as Tevye in Otterbein University's production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. The chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, who is retiring after 24 years at Otterbein, never lost a beat.

BWW Review: Stages St. Louis Close Their Season with STATE FAIR

STATE FAIR was the only musical that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote specifically for Hollywood and two versions were filmed, one in 1945 and the other in 1962. The one that's probably most familiar to audiences today is the rather forgettable 1962 version which features Pat Boone serenading a pig. Hammerstein's son, James, revived the musical in 1995, plucking tunes from ME AND JULIET, PIPE DREAM and ALLEGRO! to round out the score. While the results are certainly a mixed bag musically, the latest presentation by Stages St. Louis is splendidly mounted, and provides a lively and engaging look back at a simpler time in our history.
