Winners of the 2017 George London Awards Are Announced

The winners of the 46th annual George London Foundation Awards Competition for young American and Canadian opera singers were announced at the conclusion of the competition's final round this evening, which took place in a front of an audience at Gilder Lehrman Hall at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.

Tomorrow afternoon, 18 young American and Canadian opera singers will perform with pianist Craig Rutenberg before a panel of judges and an enthusiastic audience at New York's Morgan Library & Museum, hoping to win a George London Award, an honor that has been conferred upon hundreds of the best young singers since 1971.

The world premiere of Jon Robin Baitz's 'Vicuña,' directed by Robert Egan, opened this Sunday, October 30, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre. Performances for 'Vicuña' continue through November 20. The cast includes Linda Gehringer, Brian George, Harry Groener, Ramiz Monsef and Samantha Sloyan. Annette Warren, the 'secret' singing voice of Ava Gardner and Lucille Ball in such films as the MGM classic 'Show Boat,' and a nightclub, TV and recording star whose career spans the past 70 years, will make a long-awaited return to New York at the age of 94, with a special performance of her new one-woman show, 'I Ain't Done Yet' at Feinstein's/54 Below on Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 PM.

Those of us with long enough memories can recall some exciting nights at Opera Orchestra of New York's concerts at Carnegie Hall, with Eve Queler at the helm. It's reputed that Donizetti's PARISINA D'ESTE made quite a stir with Montserrat Caballe in the spotlight in 1974--but anyone expecting history to repeat itself when Queler mounted the opera for Angela Meade at the Rose Theatre last week was wildly disappointed.

Utah Opera to Present COSI FAN TUTTE at Capitol Theatre, 3/14-22

Utah Opera tests the limits of friendship, fidelity, and credibility in the production of Mozart's 'Così fan tutte' to see if love can indeed conquer and resist all. Conducted by Will Crutchfield and directed by Crystal Manich, this is the third production of Utah Opera's 2014-15 season. The performances are from March14 to 20 at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre at 7:30 p.m., with a matinée performance on Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m.

A performance of Verdi's Requiem that is a tripartite collaboration highlights the 2014-15 season of Kent Tritle, called 'New York's reigning choral conductor' by The New York Times. In an event emblematic of Kent's multiple roles in the city's choral life, he will conduct a performance of the massive work by the Oratorio Society of New York, of which he is Music Director, and the Symphony and Symphonic Chorus of the Manhattan School of Music, where he is Director of Choral Activities, in the grand space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he is Director of Cathedral Music and Organist -- with a new choral configuration that features the more-than-250 singers on risers in the cathedral's Great Choir space.

Haydn's oratorio The Creation (Die Schopfung) depicts nothing less than the creation of the world, based on the Bible's Book of Genesis and Book of Psalms, and Milton's Paradise Lost. It is the work with which the Oratorio Society of New York (OSNY), New York's standard for grand choral performance, will open its 2014-15 season at Carnegie Hall on Monday, November 3, 2014, at 8:00 PM. OSNY Music Director Kent Tritle will conduct The Creation in its German language version, and the three soloists - representing the archangels Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael - are Susanna Phillips, soprano; Aaron Blake, tenor; and Sidney Outlaw, baritone.
