Gil Morgenstern's Reflections Series International Presents 'Beauty Born of Terror' November 21

On Thursday, November 21 at 7:30pm, violinist and artistic director Gil Morgenstern will present the second concert of his acclaimed Reflections Series International 2013-2014 Season at Avenues: The World School (259 Tenth Ave.). The program is titled "Beauty Born of Terror" and will explore the endurance of hope and spirituality amid the cataclysmic horrors of the twentieth century through music, literature and projected imagery. Of the subject Morgenstern explains, "No one chooses the place, the time, or the circumstances of his or her birth; notes and words have even less choice. Yet one of the ironic facts of creative life is that inspiration often emerges from terror, fear and pain."

Update: Bernard Labadie To Conduct Mozart's Requiem and Works by J.S. Bach and Handel; Matthew Muckey Subs for Philip Smith

Bernard Labadie will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Mozart's Requiem; J.S. Bach's Cantata No. 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!; and Handel's “Let the Bright Seraphim” from Samson. The program's soloists will include soprano Miah Persson, mezzo- soprano Stephanie Blythe, tenor Fre?de?ric Antoun in his Philharmonic debut, bass Andrew Foster- Williams, and the New York Choral Artists directed by Joseph Flummerfelt. Associate Principal Trumpet Matthew Muckey, replacing Principal Trumpet Philip Smith, who is on temporary leave from the Orchestra, will make his Philharmonic solo debut in these performances. The concerts will take place Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m.

Jonathan Leshnoff's MONICA SONGS Tour Opens this Sunday at U.C. Berkeley

Baltimore-based composer Jonathan Leshnoff's newest commissioned work, Monica Songs, featuring soprano Jessica Rivera and pianist Robert Spano, will receive its world premiere performance on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at U.C. Berkeley. The performance launches the five-city tour of this work, which also includes performances on Oct. 17 at Bailey Hall, Atlanta, Oct. 20 at Smothers Theatre, Malibu, Calif., Oct. 26 at Memorial Hall, Cincinnati and culminates in a performance on Oct. 29 at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York. NY Phil to Open Fifth Season of CONTACT! with Esa-Pekka Salonen, 11/4

The fifth season of CONTACT!, the New York Philharmonic's new-music series, opens with An Evening with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Monday, November 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. at SubCulture, a new arts venue in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood. Composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen hosts this concert that features musicians from the New York Philharmonic performing five of his compositions: knock, breathe, shine for solo cello, Memoria for wind quintet, YTA III for solo cello, Homunculus for string quartet, and Second Meeting for oboe and piano. The program is a co-presentation by the New York Philharmonic and 92nd Street Y.

Robin Becker's INTO SUNLIGHT to Make NYC Premiere at Florence Gould Hall, 10/25-27

Robin Becker didn't blink when she decided to create a dance based on Pulitzer Prize winning author David Maraniss's book, "They Marched Into Sunlight," a 530-page cultural history of war and protest set in 1967. Becker's result, "Into Sunlight," a tour de force of imagination and emotional power, becomes remarkably relevant given the moral dilemmas America is currently facing in the world. The dance receives its New York premiere at Florence Gould Hall, Ocotber 25-27.

Cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan & Pianist Noreen Cassidy-Polera to Play Zankel Hall, 11/7

On Thursday, November 7, at 8:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall, critically acclaimed 25-year-old cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan performs in recital with pianist Noreen Cassidy-Polera. Mr. Hakhnazaryan, who won the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011, and Ms. Cassidy-Polera perform Ligeti's technically demanding Cello Sonata, as well as Humoresque, Op. 5, composed by the cellist's late mentor Mstislav Rostropovich, and Mikhail Bronner's 1995 work The Jew: Life and Death, which reflects upon the tragedy of Jewish history. Also on the program are such traditional works as Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 19, and Schumann's Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70.

Richard Topol Stars as Yogi Berra in Primary Stages' BRONX BOMBERS, Beg. Tonight

Primary Stages has announced that Richard Topol (Broadway's The Normal Heart, The Merchant of Venice) will assume the role of Yogi Berra in their World Premiere production of Bronx Bombers, written and directed by Tony Award nominee Eric Simonson (Broadway's Lombardi). Due to artistic differences, Joe Pantoliano, initially announced to play the role of Yogi Berra, will not continue with the production. The production has delayed its first performance to tonight, September 20. Opening night remains scheduled for October 8 at 7pm. Bronx Bombers runs through October 19 at Primary Stages at The Duke on 42nd Street.

Stephanie Blythe to Perform with Les Violons du Roy at Harris Theatre, 10/14-27

Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe - coming off a starring role in Robert Lepage's production of the Ring Cycle at New York's Metropolitan Opera - heads to Chicago for her Harris Theater debut, performing alongside the award-winning French-Canadian ensemble Les Violons du Roy and Music Director Bernard Labadie, October 17 at 7:30 pm. Ms. Blythe and Les Violons du Roy stop in Chicago as part of their North American tour running October 14 - 27.
