Not-for-profit History Matters: Celebrating Women's Plays of the Past has announced the recipients of its 2023 Sallie Bingham Grant, a monetary award granted to support a faculty-mentored student-directed reading series or full production of a play or plays by a historic female playwright.

Mariette Pathy Allen has been photographing the transgender community for almost 50 years. Through her artistic practice, she has been a pioneering force in gender consciousness, contributing to numerous cultural and academic publications about gender variance and lecturing worldwide.

Formerly known as History Matters/Back to the Future, the beloved nonprofit has rebranded as History Matters: Celebrating Women's Plays of the Past. History Matters promotes the study and production of women's plays from the past in colleges, universities, and theatres throughout the country.

Not-for-profit History Matters/Back to the Future has announced its winner for this year's Judith Barlow Prize. The Annual Judith Barlow Prize is awarded to a student playwright for an exceptional one-act play inspired by the work of an historic female playwright. Annually, the first place student winner of the prize receives a $2,500 award and a reading of their work in New York City, with a $500 award to the participating professor. The second place student winner receives a $1,000 award. 

History Matters/Back to the Future has announced the recipients of its inaugural Sallie Bingham Grant, a monetary award granted to support a faculty-mentored student-directed reading series or full production of a play or plays by a historic female playwright. Four (4) $2,000 grants will be awarded, with an additional $500 stipend for the faculty advisor of each project.

Red Bull Theater (Jesse Berger, Artistic Director | Jim Bredeson, Managing Director) today announced the cast for their next REVELATION READING, Moliere's Don Juan, adapted & directed by Stephen Wadsworth: Mary Bacon, Gilbert Cruz, Francesca Faridany, Adam Green, Adam Greer, Allen Tedder, Adam Stein, Mary Testa, and Raphael Nash Thompson, on Monday February 12th at 7:30 PM at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street, between Bleecker and Hudson Streets). Stephen Wadsworth's version of Don Juan was commissioned by the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the McCarter Theatre and has recently been published by Smith and Kraus.

Lexington, KY—Crystal Wilkinson fittingly begins her first novel with these lines since she has been a gatherer of stories and a teller of tales her entire life. Her gift was first recognized as a child in Appalachia, where it was cultivated by her grandmother. That inspiration, coupled with Wilkinson's reverence for home and heritage, took root to yield provocative works of award-winning poetry and short stories. But she gathers stories in more ways than with just her pen. She also challenges her writing students to discover and embody their own inspiration as influential writers. In addition, as the owner of Wild Fig Books & Coffee in Lexington, Kentucky, Wilkinson has found yet another way to encourage creativity within the community and share her love for the written word.

HISTORY MATTERS/BACK TO THE FUTURE, a coalition of theatre professionals, announced the winner of the 1st annual Judith Barlow Prize is Selina Fillinger, a student at Northwestern University, who wrote a one-act play inspired by Sophie Treadwell's play Machinal. Ms. Fillinger will receive $2,500, a trip to New York City and a staged reading of her play on Sunday, May 3rd at 3 pm at Helen Mills Theater, 139 West 26th Street, NYC. Award-winning actress Kathleen Chalfant will direct the reading which is free and open to the public.

History Matters/Back to the Future will present FORGOTTEN TREASURERS: An Evening of Scenes by Historic Women Playwrights Read by Luminaries of Stage, Film, and Television. The performance will take place at 7:00pm on Monday, February 17th at The Helen Mills Theatre 139 West 26th Street (between 7th and 6th Avenues). Tickets are by invitation only.

Olney Theatre Center today announced Martin Platt as their new Artistic Director. Mr. Platt began his tenure on May 28, 2012. He comes to Olney Theatre Center from his current position as Co-Director of Perry Street Theatricals (PST), a New York based producing company.
