Invitations to parties and galas at magnificent private homes in the Hamptons are always coveted but the hottest ducat last week was the lecture by architect, historian Gary Lawrance, co-author with Anne Surchin of Houses of the Hamptons: 1800-1930 held in one of the largest private residences ever built on the East End, Whitefield formerly known as The Orchard. Sponsored by the Southampton Historical Museum, the talk quickly sold out and several hundred guests filled the baronial music room at the sprawling estate. With its soaring, carved mahogany wood walls, coffered ceilings with hand painted embellishments and a fireplace that one could stand inside, the Music Room was the ideal setting for a discussion about the Gilded Age. The Southampton Historical Museum, under the direction of Executive Director Tom Edmonds with the backup of a committed Board of Trustees and a passionate new group of supporters has become a bustling arts center and become a jewel on the Hamptons cultural landscape. Art Southampton's Nick Korniloff and Pamela Cohen, with Beth McNeill, The McNeill Group and her husband artist Jeff Muhs co-hosted an elegant Summer Soiree to kickoff the upcoming Art Southampton, presented by Art Miami, the premier international contemporary and modern art fair and marketplace for acquiring the finest works of art available in the Hamptons. The by-invitation-only event for young collectors and Art Southampton Host Committee members was held at the Muhs' sprawling Shinnecock Hills aerie in their beautifully landscaped sculpture garden and in their art filled home on July 5.
