A spectacular small musical I adored, and a spectacular big one I missed.

I love that Virginia Rep had the guts to produce 'Spring Awakening' in 2012. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to see it again.

By popular demand, TheatreLAB and Yes, And! Entertainment have announced that their production of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years will now run through October 28th. It is this reviewer's exultant onus to relay that in the case of TheatreLAB and YES, AND's production of THE LAST FIVE YEARS, director Chelsea Burke and her team have pulled out all of the stops to give the audience an unforgettable experience, with the technical follow-through and musical polish to rival any production that has ever been mounted. And these generous qualities are symbiotically aligned with the equally powerful presence of actors Christie Jackson and Alexander Sapp. It's just that freaking good.

Not since Virginia Repertory Theatre's acclaimed staging of Spring Awakening has there been so much teen angst on one stage in Richmond. Like the aforementioned production, the young, spry cast of TheatreLAB's and Firehouse Theatre's Heathers: The Musical brings tenacity, rockin' vocals and an abundance of snark to Richmond audiences.

Based on the classic 1989 cult-favorite film, HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL is the darkly delicious story of a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who finds herself in the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High -- the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable on the peak of the high school food chain her mysterious boyfriend has a plan to put the Heathers in their place -- six feet under. HEATHER: THE MUSICAL is sexy, sassy, laugh-out-loud funny, and is guaranteed to blow you away.

Firehouse Theatre and TheatreLab, the co-producers of HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL, have added performances of their summer production that will now run for a limited engagement through July 16, 2017. "Can you fall in love if you don't know what love is?" That question is the central theme in the new play, (a love story), playing as part of the Source Festival.  Playwright Kelly Lusk has woven an intricate look at the lives of three couples, who seemingly are unrelated. The impetus of which is the question of "do you know what love is?" You have the popular high school girl in love with the emo-loner, two gay teenagers awakening their feelings, and an older couple who meet and fall in love through on-line anonymity.

Firehouse Theatre Project presents POP!, a new musical with book and lyrics by Maggie-Kate Coleman and music by Anna K. Jacobs, directed by Jase Smith. Sponsored in part by Yale Repertory Theatre's Binger Center for New Theatre, POP! will play for 18 performances, today, July 11 - August 10. Opening Night is Friday, July 12.
