Sundance Institute, in collaboration with Annapurna Pictures, invites fans and supporters of independent cinema to celebrate the irrepressible writer/director/producer/musician/activist Boots Riley. Boots, an alumni of both the Sundance Labs and Film Festival, will be honored with the Sundance Institute's annual Vanguard Award at its summer fundraiser on June 14, 2018 at The Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, just before the Los Angeles debut of his new film, Sorry to Bother You and an afterparty for all ticketholders immediately following. Proceeds from the evening will help advance Sundance Institute's mission and programs that  discover, support and amplify risk-taking and exciting independent artists in film, theatre and new media. 

Recording artist and Oscar-winner Common hosted the fourth annual “Toast To The Arts: A Celebration of Fearless Art” event, March 2, honoring the Academy Award nominations of Get Out nominee Daniel Kaluuya (Best Actor); Mudbound nominees Mary J. Blige (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song), director Dee Rees (Best Writing Adapted Screenplay) and producer Charles D. King; as well as legendary filmmaker Charles Burnett.

Day 2 at the MACRO Lodge presented by Shea Moisture went out with a bang! Mistaken multiple times for TAO by passersby due to the overwhelming crowd waiting to get in, Midnight MACRO hosted by Charles and Stacey King, at the MACRO Lodge on Main St was Saturday night's best party. The overcapacity event brought in not only the cast of MACRO's Sorry to Bother You (Tessa Thompson, Lakeith Stanfield, Steven Yeun, Director Boots Riley) which had its Sundance premiere earlier in the evening, but also saw a number of the festival's other attendees including Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, Omari Hardwick, Anthony Ramos (She's Gotta Have It), Coleman Domingo, Lena Waithe, Danai Gurira, John Legend, Issa Rae and Insecure co-star Jay Ellis, Gabby Sidobe, and Chris Hardwick.

Sundance Institute showcases bold, independent storytelling at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, beginning with today's announcement of feature films selected across all categories. The Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort, from January 18 28.

Yesterday, it was announced that Hugo and Nebula Award Winner Octavia E. Butler's Xenogenesis / Lilith's Brood series, which begins with DAWN, will be adapted into a TV series by Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th, the upcoming 2018 release A Wrinkle in Time) and Victoria Mahoney (Queen Sugar, Yelling to the Sky) in their most recent collaboration.

In the 89 years that the Academy Awards have been held, over 40 musicals have either been nominated for or have won an Oscar for Best Picture, including this last December's LA LA LAND. Long Wharf Theatre will honor Charles C. Kingsley, a former chair of the Board of Trustees and a partner at Wiggin and Dana, and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, with the organization's Founders Award.

Sundance Institute today announced a significant expansion of its signature artist development programs to include targeted support for second-time feature filmmakers, addressing a growing need in the field of independent storytelling, especially for women and filmmakers of color. The new FilmTwo Initiative, led by the Institute's renowned Feature Film Program, with generous support from Founding Partner NBCUniversal, will offer selected directors specialized creative and tactical guidance in navigating the unique challenges of making their second feature films. The Initiative's inaugural Fellows announced today participated in a Screenwriters Intensive in March and continue to receive customized creative and tactical support and participate in select FFP activities.

Drawing on the style of Shakespeare, writer Mike Bartlett looks to a future where Charles, Prince of Wales finally becomes KING CHARLES III.
