Artistic Director Karen Kain commissioned a fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s timeless tale from superstar Alexei Ratmansky, resident choreographer of American Ballet Theatre. His Romeo and Juliet, set to Prokofiev’s score, blends the elegance and stateliness of classical vocabulary with the physicality of contemporary expression. Deftly attuned to highlighting the narrative’s dramatic moments and the intimacy of the star-crossed romance, Ratmansky creates a dance drama with electrifying fight sequences and an unforgettable balcony pas-de-deux. This larger than life production manifests the simplicity of Renaissance art through its geometric sets and period costumes.
